Bolivia 30: Life as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the 1960s, by Frank T. Darmiento

After completing all the application steps for the Peace Corps I received an invitation to enter a training program and go to Bolivia as a Peace Corps volunteer. It was the 30th training group of Peace Corps Volunteers to be sent to Bolivia. We were Bolivia 30. Now when I reflect on the experience of being a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1960s I recognize that it was a different experience than today’s version of the Peace Corps. We functioned without computers, cell phones or even telephones. We had no GPS to guide us, yet we travelled all over Bolivia and South America. Despite not having today's technology available, none of us from Bolivia 30 would trade our experiences for a modern version. In some ways we faced higher risks, sometimes living in relatively remote areas. But that also gave us more freedom. Of course, with more freedom came more responsibility. We had to decide how to allocate our time effectively. The political climate was also very different. Americans were looked up to and the people we encountered were eager to learn about the United States. And we learned that there are other cultures in the world and different ways of doing things. We took those lessons with us and it shaped the rest of our lives. The book is unique in that it incorporates personal stories from more than a dozen Peace Corps Volunteers who served in Bolivia during this period. Complementing the stories are 22 color and two black and white photographs taken during the author's Peace Corps service.

After completing his Peace Corps service he worked as an environmental engineer and manager and earned an M.S. degree in environmental engineering from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. After transcribing the stories he eventually decided they could form the core of an interesting book. He fleshed out the book with information about his own Peace Corps experience as well as world events that were transpiring while he served in the Peace Corps. Loved the book
By William D. Howe
Loved the book. I was in Bolivia 31 and knew many of the people and places mentioned in the book. In fact, I attended the same college as Julia and we dated for a time. I trained at Utah State University in the agricultural program and was headed to the Altiplano in late 1967.. Just a couple weeks before we were to ship out a request was made for a volunteer to teach chemistry and metallurgy .at a University in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. I jumped at the opportunity. At that point of the training I had grown to hate sheep and could not picture myself working with these animals for two years in the Altiplano. Loved the city and the people of Santa Cruz and had considered moving there for retirement. However, the current leadership of Bolivia is a bit hostile to the United States these days. I feared that, about the tine I got settled in the country, Evo Morales would run all then 'gringos' out.

Not only did I teach at the University but I took over for a volunteer who left 18 months early to return to the States to marry. When not working at the University I was then the assistant director of a boys' orphanage home. That turned out to be the highlight of my service as a PCV.

For those contemplating service in the Peace Corps, for those who would like to get an idea of what volunteers encounter when serving or for those ex-Bolivia volunteers looking for some nostalgia, this book is highly recommended.

Thank you, Frank, for the memories.

As a member of Bolivia 30, I loved this Book! Frank Darmiento did an excellent job of giving us a view of what life was like as a volunteer in Bolivia. The book is easy to read so much like reading a diary. Excellent for anyone doing research on the Peace Corps or for anyone contemplating service as a volunteer.
