This is a supplement to Dr. Westman's class (video link below)

Dr. Westman teaches this diet to a class at Duke University and the video linked above is of an introductory class where he explains the diet. I guess so many people asked for the info in the class handouts that Dr Westman put this document on Amazon.
After successfully losing weight a few years ago on the Dukan diet (high protein, low fat, low carb), I found that as I got older, it didn't work for me and wasn't sustainable. I still eventually had cravings and got tired of eating so much protein.
I researched this Low Carb - High Fat - Moderate Protein (Keto) diet and now my husband and I have lost weight (so far -me 10lbs, him 14lbs) - however, the weight loss has really become just a wonderful side effect of this "lifestyle".
We are only in week 5, but we are experiencing reduced hunger, quicker satiety, better focus, concentration and attention span, increased energy level all day (evenly), better memory, restful sleep, less skin problems for me, more overall strength/endurance and a feeling of overall increased sense of well-being. We are in our 50's, and both work full time. This has honestly felt like a fog has been lifted.
Here's how it works: When you eat carbs (sugar/starches) it raises the glucose (sugar) levels in your blood. When that happens, your liver responds by making insulin. Insulin signals the brain, telling it to store all fat. The more carbs you eat for fuel, the more carbs you crave. (Think of it as burning newspaper (carbs) in a fireplace for heat vs. burning wood (fat) Fat burns evenly and burns longer, without having to constantly refuel). The more you eat carbs, the more you trigger insulin production - the enemy of weight loss.
BUT when you deprive your body of carbs (less than 20g/day) your body will choose to burn fat as fuel instead. This stage is called ketosis (because it triggers the liver to produce ketones) and happens in about 3 days time on average. Once you put your body into ketosis, when you eat fat, it sends a signal to the brain that you are full and satisfied. You will not be hungry all the time and you will know when you are full. Your body will tell you and it will not let you overeat. Now your body will BURN all the fat that you eat - and will not store it. And - BONUS - when you are not eating, your body will happily burn the fat you have stored on your body - like your belly, hips or butt.
IT IS NOT A FAD - It's science. This diet is over 20 years old, originally created to treat epilepsy, it is also used to treat/reverse some types of diabetes. This is the perfect diet for those who have had trouble losing weight due to insulin-resistance.
It's SO important to have an open mind about this diet because everything we were taught, is wrong. Fat is not the bad guy - sugar is. This diet can/will lower your cholesterol. Do some research on this before trying it and see all the info and data out there. More and more doctors are standing up, coming out and acknowledging that what they were taught was wrong. Low fat diets don't work for many people. If your doctor isn't on board, find a doctor who is.
From my experience, I say this: This diet feels right. It feels like we were meant to eat this way. I used to be always hungry, always thinking about my next meal. I overate, never really registering that I was full. I was often tired, sore and stiff. Couldn't stand for long periods without shifting my weight from one foot to the other or leaning on something. My posture was bad, my attention span was short, and woke in the morning feeling like I needed more sleep. Now I find myself really shocked at how many problems sugar can cause with your body and your health.
I suggest that you search the web and do research yourself. but don't discount this lifestyle until you do. It may be labeled a diet but this is a way to let your body self-regulate itself and heal itself by giving it the fuel to do so. And once it does - all you have to do is eat the high fat/low carb/moderate protein food that you love: bacon, eggs, sausage, ribeyes, caesar salad, ribs, buffalo wings with bleu cheese dressing... We no longer crave carbs!

Keytogenic Diet

Need to take time to read it. Very small book, arrived very quickly. Apparently this diet is taken from a dietary approach to dealing with seizures that predates much of modern medicine. Read about it in Wikipedia. Whatever; it is a low-everything diet that I intend to use along with a generally "South Beach Phase 3" approach to control and reduce my body weight gradually and permanently. Lifestyle modification needs all the valid information possible and some variety if that can be managed, IMHO.

This should have been advertised as a " brochure" pamphlet or handout, certainly not as a book. It was only a few pages in length and he price was excessive. I was so disappointed, that I just put it aside and maybe later I will read it. .
