I like Peter Sterry quite a bit

I like Peter Sterry quite a bit. His thought is both mystical and fairly dense in complexity. I came across him while studying the Cambridge Platonists. They were a group of instructors affiliated with Cambridge college during the period of the English commonwealth. Most of them were called latitudinarians because they supported less restrictions on matters of faith and conscience. They were often strongly Protestant in theology but also Platonist and Neoplatonist in philosophy. Their ideas are interesting, but so far I have been the most impressed with Sterry. His discourse is more than cursorily poetic. His mystical tendencies are very hard to separate from his theological and philosophical tendencies, although some compilers have attempted to do just that. This compilation is more honest than the McMahon treatment in that regard. Sterry really made it clear to me that not all Puritans were cut from the same cloth. The introduction includes a great biography of Sterry and a breakdown of his theology. This is really a great introduction to the man and his thought, but his works need to be read as a whole, not just as brief extracts. This really only provides a glimpse into his brilliance.

STAR TREK: LOG ONE by Alan Dean Foster

Star Trek: Log One (1974), by Alan Dean Foster, contains three novellas adapted from the first three episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series: "Beyond the Farthest Star," "Yesteryear," and "One of Our Planets is Missing." Here, the crew investigates an ancient derelict ship, Spock travels back in time to save his child self, and the Enterprise is swallowed by a planet-eating cloud.

Each novella is about sixty pages, and generally, this is a good length for this material, although there's quite a bit more setup, especially for "Beyond," and the pacing tends to be on the leisurely side. Foster has a narrative flair for the dramatic, and his characters often ponder grand cosmic thoughts. The overall effect is a different tone and feel from either The Original Series or TAS. The stories themselves are solid if not spectacular; "Yesteryear" was easily the best TAS episode, and, with the most character focus of the three, it's the best story here, too.

Foster's characterization is adequate at best, and the dialogue doesn't always ring true. The Kirk-Spock-McCoy interplay isn't on the level that Trek fans will likely expect, and tends to lack both charm and humor. Kirk himself is uncharacteristically awkward at times, while the Spock-McCoy exchanges are more immature and less good-spirited than what we saw on either TOS or TAS.

The only scientific nitpick here is in "Beyond," where the characters regularly experience sound on a ship with no atmosphere (although in fairness, every iteration of Star Trek going back to TOS has abused this).

On the whole, Star Trek fans should find Star Trek: Log One reasonably readable and enjoyable, whether they've seen TAS or not.

a diamond in the rough!

This book took me by surprise! It is truly a hidden gem! The entertainment value alone is immeasureable. The writing style is unique, but refreshing, and once you get a feel for the author's style you'll understand why Grandma Moses is such a beloved artist. This book "reads" like a Grandma Moses painting "looks". To say that this book transcends genres would be THE understatement of the post-modern literary scene. This read is complex in that it has a purposed simplicity. This author is most definitely an undiscovered star...or more accurately an undiscovered solar system! Do yourself a HUGE favor and read this book! I can't wait for this author's next work to be released!

A few years ago I read a book by Merlin Stone called When God Was a Woman, in which she wrote that in the beginning, people prayed to the Creatress of Life, the Mistress of Heaven. At the very dawn of religion, God was a woman...the female deity in the Near and Middle East was revered as Goddess much as people today think of God...the original status of the Goddess was as supreme deity...the Great Goddess was regarded as immortal, changeless, omnipotent; and the concept of fatherhood had not yet been introduced into religious thought. As a critical thinker, I know that sometimes a lie is told when the truth is declared halfway or haphazardly. Stone, who happens to be a White female artist and college professor, never mentioned the racial make-up of the female divinities of the world s earliest civilizations she wrote about. I don t know understand how Stone could write a book about When God Was a Woman and then later write a book on Three Thousand Years of Racism, which focuses on uncovering evidence of racism imposed by Indo-Europeans after they conquered most of the same regions discussed in When God Was a Woman, and fail to connect the probability that the Goddesses she first wrote about were originally depicted as Black women. How can she admit that historical, mythological and archaeological evidence suggests that it was these northern people who brought with them the concepts of light as good and dark as evil (very possibly the symbolism of their racial attitudes toward the darker people of the southern areas) and of a supreme male deity; but not admit that the Goddess of theses Black people was also Black before they and She were conquered by White people (i.e., Indo-Europeans). Whether this failing was accidental or intentional is irrelevant, yet one could assume that the Goddesses would originally resemble the people who worship them. According to Albert Churchward, the earliest members of the human race appeared in the interior of the African continent about two million years ago, then from the region of the Great Lakes they spread over the entire continent. Groups of these early men wandered down the Nile Valley, settled in Egypt, and then later dispersed themselves to all parts of the world...As these early Africans wandered over the world, they differentiated into the various human subspecies that now inhabit our planet. The men who remained in the tropical and equatorial regions retained their dark complexions, whereas those that settled in the temperate zones lost a portion of their dusky pigmentation and developed a fairer skin. Provided that the original racial profile of the Nile, Indus, and Tigris-Euphrates River Valley as well as the Aegean civilizations has been clandestinely confirmed as Black/African, then the female divinities worshipped in these civilizations should also logically be Black/African. Accordingly, in the beginning, to revise Stone, God was a Black woman.

Good information but highly repetitive

This book has a lot of good information from a lot of great sources, many known scholars. The author does not do much in the way of offering his own opinion or perspective, though, it is mostly a copy of other scholars organized for the reader to put together. So I give this three stars for the quality of the information, I would have given the book more stars but the author is HIGHLY repetitive. He repeats over and over and over the same information and the same quotes and also due to lack of editing, there are sentences and whole paragraphs that are repeated one right after the other. I was not at all impressed with the editing or the senseless repetition. Without all of that, the book would have been half the size leading me to wonder whether the author purposely repeated large quantities of information just to make the book longer. Either way, the information makes the price worth it, but be prepared to either re-read information or skip over it for the 3rd or 4th time.

Very In-Depth & Replete w/well documented references

I found Professor Gibson's "tree-free ebook" very in-depth and replete with well-documented references from many educators, and scholars that I know as well as a few that bought "new" enlightenment. I appreciate his scholarship and the re-telling of a her story that must never be forgotten nor relegated to the abyss of amnesia-tic forgetfulness. In addition, I was also impressed with the fact that a male could affably spin this truth w/o bias, prejudice or hidden agenda. Therefore, I highly recommend this ebook to all truth seekers, like myself.

Maybe the Only Book You'll Need on the Subject

This book appears to be a coffee table book. Full color photographs, expensive paper, text interspersed with photos on every page, Wide text margins. One might think the publisher was trying to stretch inadequate text and fill the remaining spaces with photos. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This is a serious book about a serious subject, the camera lens. Almost any topic that deals with the lens is covered in this book. Starting with a historical perspective, it then explores the wave action of light, explains in moderate detail the physics of lens, and then goes into a description of why most modern lens are compared to the lens of 35 mm cameras.

Aperture, F stop, lens elements, fast lens, slow lens, metering, mechanisms, the list goes on and on. Lens from different manufacturers are described, an explanation of why the "perfect" lens doesn't exist, matching the lens to the project, choosing the right lens letting your creativity free . . .

And it's not just the completeness of the presentation that beckons, the simple clarity of the text is a model for those who write of technical subjects for the amateur. The book is not likely to interest the professional or serious amateur, they'll already know most of the material. But for the beginner to middle level amateur, there is much here to study.

This is a very impressive book. If you love cameras, if you'd like good advice about choosing lens for your camera, if you'd just like to understand the relationship between aperture and focal length in composing pictures, and more, then this is a worthy addition to your collection. And maybe the coffee table isn't such a bad spot for this book, you'll be able to pick the book up regularly and learn a bit more about the camera eye view of the world.

not what I expected........

this was and excellent book. I thought i was buying a guide to buying lenses, and instead I got an education on lenses. History of optics, overview of light, lens mechanics, and then the info i bought the book for.
Five star book : well written and organized, AWESOME photos, and this will be a reference guide for me.

You'll definitely want this book

The lens is easily the single most complicated piece of equipment in any photographer's arsenal. Yet even some accomplished photographers find it hard to grasp all the intricacies and nuances and camera lens hows and whys. That's where this book comes in. Whether you want to learn, need a refresher, are buying this book for a novice photographer, or just want a handy, thorough reference, pick up The Lens. At Amazon's price it's a steal.

And even if you do know everything there is to know about lenses and optics, the photography in this book is awesome.

Can't recommend it highly enough.
