The perfect companion for wine touring in Oregon

This book is the perfect resource to take along anytime you're traveling and wine is on the itinerary. What I really like about it is that it goes beyond the wineries and includes so much else. We just got back from a cycling tour in Southern Oregon, and most of the folks in our group are winos. It was great to be able to read up on not only the local wineries to visit, but restaurants and sites as well.
The writing style is fun and breezy, without that just-the-facts stiffness of so many guide books. The authors have managed to pick up on interesting little facts about many of the places, and that brings a lot of depth to the entries. It's not enough to know that someplace (or some wine) is good; I want to feel like I know a bit about it before I go check it out.
The fact that this book covers the entire state means it's going to get used every time we head out to explore our state!

Solid Guide to a Great Wine Region

Now that Sherry Moore and Jeff Welsch's "Oregon Wine Country" is out there, it's hard to imagine touring Oregon's wine regions without a copy. Broken down into nine regions that include all of the 16 American Viticultural Areas in Oregon, this book provides comprehensive listings and descriptions (including pricing) of everything wine: vineyards, wineries, relevant bistros, bars and restaurants, festivals and lodging options. There aren't many guides providing extensive information on Oregon wine; this book is the best among them. That's not to say there isn't room for improvement. The maps generally lack detail, and for the most part, the photos--neither artistically composed nor informative--don't add much to the text. That being said, the writing itself flows well and is packed with impeccably well-researched information. The short opening chapter, "History and Terroir" is especially interesting.

Familiarity...

I was fortunate to have this book when I toured a number of wineries in the northern Willamette Valley. Before I arrived at each winery, I felt I already knew the owners based on what was written about the professionals at each stop. As someone who prefers a prescience feel to where I'm going, I was very satisfied with the authors' comprehensive and intimate reviews.
This book also has neat, informative side stories capturing the history of Oregon. In addition, I love that the authors decided to include write-ups on the surrounding restaurants (we all like to eat) and lodging (if the Dionysian spirit should keep one overnight!), allowing everyone to have a holistic experience. The pictures throughout the book also add to this feeling, making the reader feel like he/she is there partaking in the wine-drinking celebration. Well done!
Lastly, the owners of each winery were thrilled of their mention in this book. When I showed them the book, a couple owners even gave me discounts! Gotta love that!

About the Author

Edith Wharton (1862-1937), American novelist and short-story writer, was born in New York City. Strongly influenced by Henry James, she is best known for her subtle and su-perbly crafted studies of the tragedies and ironies in the lives of members of middle-class and artistocratic New York soci-ety in the the nineteenth century. She was educated in New York and Europe, and married Edward Wharton, a Boston banker, in 1885. When her husband became mentally ill, she cared for him until 1913, when she settled permanently in France and divorced him. Among her best and most characteristic works are The House of Mirth (1905) and The Age of Innocence (1920), for which she received a Pultizer prize.

Fascinating first novel of Edith Wharton

This just misses being a novella, as it is quite short, but it shows Wharton in her element at the very start of her literary career, it being her first novel. The influence of her friend Henry James' novella, The Aspern Papers, is evident in her story of a young man tempted to sell love letters sent to him by a famous author for whom he did not care, in order to make enough money to marry the woman he loves. The psychological miasma he is thrown into due to his guilt and fear of exposure balance his slow maturation in realizing his betrayal of the woman who loved him first.

Superb character study and a fast read - this edition is nicely printed and is most readable.

Quick And Enjoyable

"The Touchstone" is Edith Wharton's second book and it was published in 1900. It was also published under the title "A Gift From The Grave". Her previous literary effort was a collection of short stories titled "The Greater Inclination" and this is a longer story, roughly what we would today call a novella. The author takes an interesting premise, and creates an engaging story which is easy to read and flows quickly. The reader doesn't want to put this book down.

The premise of the story is that a man (Glennard) of limited means is looking for a way to earn money so that he can afford to marry the woman he loves (Alexa Trent). Earlier in his life, he was loved by Mrs. Aubyn, who has become a famous author and since died. Thus he is in possession of the letters she wrote him, and due to her fame he could publish them, but that would not be proper in his mind, and he feels that he would not be worthy of Alexa Trent if he did such a thing.

Of course, the reader immediately knows that he is going to have to do this unthinkable thing, and the interesting part of the story is how it affects Glennard and his relationship with Alexa Trent, and with Flemel, the friend from whom he seeks the advice initially, and who helps him get the letters published. Glennard destroys one relationship, and nearly destroys the other, and often lashes out irrationally when the book is discussed. He is constantly trying to figure out who knows, and who Flemel might have told, and if his wife has figured it out, even when he tries to make it obvious that he has done the deed.

It is an interesting story about the turmoil which people go through when circumstances force them to act in a way which they wouldn't ordinarily do. Many people today might not understand why Glennard is even troubled by the idea of publishing the correspondence of someone who has passed on, but it certainly works well for the period in which it was written. This is even better than her first book, though I don't think it merits five stars.

Surprisingly Contemporary - 100 years ahead of its time

Because I am adapting this novella for Warner Bros as a feature film, I'm interested in hearing what readers have to say about it. This is Wharton's first novella, written at a time when she was still developing her craft as a writer; the story can appear woefully underwritten. Still, the story is mesmerizing and dangerous, a Faustian tale of betrayal, greed and the consequences paid, and the more often I read through it, the more hidden meanings emerge. When you read it, think of the lover who sold Princess Diana's first secrets of their affair to the tabloids, and the consequences since. What ever happened to that man? Perhaps, like Stephen Glennard in "The Touchstone", he has gone mad from guilt, which, ironically enough, might prove he has a conscious after all.

Ebert combines interviews and printed primary sources in this brilliant reconstruction of the infantryman's experience during the Vietnam War. Though accounting for less than 10% of the American troops in Vietnam, the infantry suffered more than 80% of the losses. Ebert, a secondary school teacher in Wisconsin, tells their story chronologically, from the grunts' induction and training, through their arrival in Vietnam, their first encounters with battle and their final rendezvous with the airplane that would carry them home--the "freedom bird," one of the numerous military terms, abbreviations and Vietnamese words defined in the glossary. Because of the relative lack of large, readily identifiable major battles during the Vietnam War (Hue, Khe Sanh, Hamburger Hill, etc.), military histories of the war can be difficult for the average reader to comprehend. Endless operations and campaigns without the anchor of a turning-point battle easily confuse and disorient. Vietnam literature retains an enthusiastic following, however, because it features a large number of oral histories and personal narratives. The reader follows the individual soldier rather than the large campaigns. Ebert, a high school history teacher, describes the combat experiences of 60 Army and Marine Corps infantrymen from basic training through their year in Vietnam. This is an outstanding example of history through the eyes of the ordinary person. Ebert's book is the finest of its type since Al Santoli's Everything We Had ( LJ 4/15/81). Highly recommended.

Vivid, creative use of oral history (here, with the remembrances woven together by incisive commentary) that takes the conventional combat-report format--induction, boot camp, raw recruit, seasoned vet--and breathes new life into the war experience. Ebert (who teaches high-school history and social studies in Wisconsin) interviewed approximately 40 Army grunts and Marines for this report, and also drew on interview-transcripts of South Dakota's Vietnam Veterans Oral History Project. He and his subjects paint the Southeast Asian battleground in its true, unglamorous colors: One soldier likens his first exposure to the country's heat ``to having someone hold a hair-dryer up to his nose''; the author says that Vietnam's pervasive odor was characterized by many as ``seminauseating and often likened to dead fish''). In this Vietnam, grenades are dangerous to friend and foe alike (one soldier describes standing in a chow line as someone accidentally pulls a pin, killing two and wounding 26), and ``humping'' the bush is a miserable, surreal existence, but one that most grunts stick to in order to avoid being branded a quitter--the lowest of the low--even though most days nothing is attained but total exhaustion. Also detailed are offensive operations, corpse mutilation, booby traps, drug use, racial conflict, and varied atrocities. As the soldiers' time in Vietnam gets ``short'' (Army men serve 12 months; Marines, 13) their primary aim becomes survival before their luck runs out. Finally--as detailed in a too brief epilogue--the soldiers fly home, muster out of the service, and then often must withstand criticism for their part in a hated war. Best down to earth, reality oriented Vietnam book I've ever

I've read many books on Vietnam and this is the best yet if you are interested in the real life of the grunts. A very down to earth and human look at the Vietnam experience. From prior to induction to return home. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the real nitty gritty of the average guy in Vietnam. As I said, best I've ever read!!!

Great Reference for Infantryman's Experience

When I first started researching the Vietman war, I happened to come across this book at the library--exactly what I was looking for since I wanted to understand the individual experience of the infantryman. I had been warned by veterans that a lot of inaccurate books were out there, and since the writer's credentials were simply that he was a high school teacher, I first read it with a somewhat skeptical eye. As I continued to read memoirs and histories and speak with veterans, though, I also kept coming back to this book. Finally I just broke down and bought it. Though I've only spot read various passages throughout the book, it is even-handed, always rings true, is consistent with other information I've gotten, and offers factual information to set things in context (I wish there was a little more of that). Ebert has done a great job getting vets to talk--not always easy--now maybe he should create an updated edition to flesh out the coming home aspects. I hope this author still teaches high school.

This is what the grunts really went through.

I would give this book more than 5 stars if possible. Wisconsin high school teacher James R. Ebert does a masterful job as he combines interviews and printed primary sources in this remarkable telling of the infantryman's experience during the Vietnam War. Ebert tells the story of the US Army and a few US Marine infantrymen during the Vietnam War. He takes their story from induction into the service through basic and advanced individual training, arrival in Vietnam, their first combat experiences, the first killed in action they experience, in some cases the soldier's death, and the freedom birds that take them back to the world. Ebert points out while infantryman accounted for less than 10% of the American troops in Vietnam, the infantry suffered more than 80% of the losses.

Ebert uses an interesting technique starting every chapter with a letter by Leonard Dutcher to his parents. Dutcher just wanted to do his part for God and country and go home at the end of his tour. In the last chapter, we find out that Dutcher was killed. It caught me off guard and really added to the impact of the book. Ebert takes many of the soldiers and Marines experiences word for word from the individual himself through interviews or letters. It is a collective look at similarities of the many infantry soldiers and Marines in the war. It is a very personal account from many points of view.

This is an important book in Vietnam War literature. This is what the grunts really went through. I was left with somewhat of feeling of guilt from reading the book. Why? I graduated high school in 1971. Some of my high classmates went to Vietnam and fought. My classmate Everett Maxwell was killed in action. I went to college and was ultimately commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry, went through airborne school and served three years active duty. My becoming an officer deferred my entry on active duty from 1971 to 1975. This is the reason for my reflective thoughts.

Very good overview

One reviewer called this the most comprehensive guide to qualitative research - not quite - go to Michael Quinn Patton for that - but this is an excellent text to qualitative researchers who are beginning to fall in love with qualitative research. This text tells you why you are so smitten, helps you understand the origins and history of qualitative research and explains the connections with Sociology.

It is practical and readable and as a doctoral student and undergraduate instructor I see that it has pretty wide applicability. I have not seen the 8th edition with Lune's addition after Berg's death, but understand there is more info about coding and analysis that might have been missing from earlier editions.

Practical introduction to what BDD looks like in the real world

I am a huge fan of Manning books and have a library of several purchased books. Behavior-driven development was developed by Dan North as a response to the issues encountered teaching test-driven development to answer the following questions:

* Where to start in the process
* What to test and what not to test
* How much to test in one go
* What to call the tests
* How to understand why a test fails

The traditional development process provides many opportunities for misunderstandings and miscommunication. BDD in action presents the process how software development should be managed by both business interests and technical insight. Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) encourages teams to use conversation and concrete examples to build up a shared understanding of how an application should work and which features really matter. BDD in Action is a great introduction to Behavior Driven Development.

This is what I liked about the book:
* Presentation of Behavior Driven Development theory with real world practical approach to make readers comfortable and have a quick grasp on the subject
* Book does a good job defining the BDD principles and practices. The books shows you how to integrate them into your existing development process
* How to use BDD for acceptance, integration, and unit testing
* The book is filled with numerous examples of BDD tools and their usage for multiple platforms. For example The book covers automating scenarios using JBehave in Java, Behave in Python, SpecFlow in .Net, and Cucumber.js in Javascript.
* The book goes beyond introduction with inclusion of advance topics such as living documentation, running parallel acceptance tests, and continuous integration

This book offers quite a lot to consider and try, if you work in software development

Is "Behavior Driven Development" (BDD) better than "Test Driven Development" (TDD)? That's not the right question, John Ferguson Smart says in his well-written new book.

BDD techniques can be brought into virtually any software development method and help you build and deliver better software. "The traditional software development process offers many opportunities for misunderstandings and miscommunication," Smart writes.

One of the key approaches in BDD, therefore, is to get a project's major stakeholders to talk to each other AND work together to develop concrete examples of what each feature should do and how the desired software should behave.

You want software "that works well and is easy to change and maintain...." But you also don't want to waste thousands or millions of dollars on creating software that does not provide "real value to its users."

BDD, the author points out, "is a set of software engineering practices designed to help teams build and deliver more valuable, higher quality software faster. It draws on Agile and lean practices including, in particular, Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Domain-Driven Design (DDD. But most importantly, BDD provides a common language based on simple, structured sentences expressed in English (or in the native language of the stakeholders) that facilitates communications between project team members and business stakeholders."

The author describes and shows how to put BDD into action in real-world settings. If you work in software development or are hoping to land a job there, you likely need to read this book and keep it handy.

Set to be the definitive BDD manual

“John Smart has taken on a large, fast-moving space and produced a book that is everything I would want it to be. I thought I might as well start the review by including this quote from the Foreword to BDD in Action, by Dan North (the original creator of Behaviour-Driven Development), because it sums up exactly what I agree John Smart has succeeded in doing. In an environment where there are still lots of new ideas being thrown around, often just in blogs or conference talks and the like, Smart has managed to consolidate the heart of BDD into one comprehensive book. In particular, whereas many books on BDD focus on one tool with with a bit of theory, Smart manages to provide more than sufficient instruction in a range of tools (including JBehave, Cucumber-JVM, SpecFlow, Cucumber-JS, Spock, Thucydides), and yet still undergird that with a “solid theoretical foundation”.

BDD is a very hot topic in software development today. It is an approach based on the seemingly simple premise of focusing on developing software that directly meets business goals. The increasing widespread adoption of agile methodologies has provided a stage for the necessary collaboration and fast feedback loops that make BDD viable and many organisations are seeing the benefits of adopting some, if not all, of the practices associated with BDD (whether they call it BDD or Acceptance Test-Driven Development or Specification by example or call it no special name at all). BDD in Action addresses all of the principle BDD activities, i.e. deriving features from business goals, illustrating features with examples, creating executable specifications to guide development, automating specifications and producing living documentation. In the process, other key contributions to BDD techniques (by the likes of Gojko Adzic, Chris Matts, et al.) are explained in just enough detail to enable the beginner to get started, while providing a handy reference for the BDD practitioner with some experience.

Working systematically through the BDD activities, Smart provides excellent signposting, examples and illustrations to keep the reader on track. In particular, A BDD approach is traced, from business goals to living documentation, on the fictitious ‘Flying High Airlines’ business, which is a tremendous help in providing concrete examples of how the theory works out.The repeated use of a diagram describing the principles activities, as they evolve through each chapter, is also very instructive.

The decision to deal with a variety of tools, rather than focus on just one or two, really increases the value of the book. Often the same exercise is demonstrated in different tools and for those who haven’t already committed to tools, it is a concise comparative guide to the features of different tools. For those who have already got a preference on tools, it will be a great benefit that the book cover’s the main tools more than adequately (avoiding having to try to translate Smart’s excellently structured content to another tool themselves).

BDD in Action is a very practical, hands-on manual for BDD practitioners. I see it as a great introduction for those embarking on this path and the kind of handbook that will be left out by development teams to refer to regularly. It doesn’t try to sell BDD, so other literature on case studies et al. may be better for that, but it is no doubt destined to become the definitive BDD manual for the foreseeable future.

About the Author

ALVIN G. WINT is a Professor of Management Studies at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. He holds a doctorate in international business from Harvard University. Prior to his appointment to a chair at the University of the West Indies, he was an Associate Professor of International Business at Northeastern University. He has published extensively and been a consultant to the World Bank, the United Nations, and several national governments in the area of international business-government relations.
