The literature about visualization has become increasingly large in the past decade or so. Few is the author of some of the most important books about it, such as 'Show Me the Numbers', 'Now I See It', and 'Information Dashboard Design'. Signal, Fews fourth book, nicely integrates with the previous ones by covering something that is usually overlooked by most authors: How to use simple charts to get insights from the data. As it has become in Few's oeuvre, the book is well illustrated and written in a clear style

Great intro to visual analytics sensemaking & thinking clearly

This book offers a clear case for data visualization with believable business examples that show how to find signals in noisy data. The admirable clarity of Stephen Few’s writing tells lucid stories of how to look at data so as to produce actionable insights. Few is fearless in condemning big data excesses such as those who claim that “more [data] trumps better”, which Few labels as “an ignorant claim.” Few counters the big data pressures for volume, velocity, and variety (3Vs) by celebrating the virtues of small, slow, and sure (3Ss). The remarkable aspect of this book is that it provides a solid course in statistics, but it replaces mathematical formulas with visually compelling examples. It deals with means, medians, distributions, and correlations for numeric data and also includes spatial data with well-crafted maps. I’m pleased that this book also covers advanced visualizations such as treemaps, parallel coordinates, and coordinated displays with highlighting and filtering. It closes with ample references and a personal moral perspective about seeing the world more clearly.

This book is a most excellent way of learning how to find, communicate, and use information. If you need these skills and you don't have time to read a pile of textbooks, this is a good place to start.

Data analysis is taught anywhere, but data synthesis is a much rarer skill. With Signal we have a resource that covers both of these angles, is easy to use, and comprehensive in coverage. This is an excellent standalone guide but would also be a great overview to the subject prior to deeper studies.

The authors point out that the book is somewhat late. Originally thought of in early 2001, in response to the end of the Cold War. But history proceeded to intervene in September of that year. The radical changes in US foreign policy necessitated a complete redirection of the book. But it is still about the US and how Americans perceived and coped with evolving dangers in the world.

Of these, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a major topic. Another is the spending policies of the US government. Unsurprisingly, an entire chapter is devoted to terrorism. The book summarises and interprets many surveys taken in the last 10 years, about these issues. The surveys were of US public opinion. The motivation of the analyses is to suggest how the government can best present policies and decisions to the public, as well as possibly use the surveys to find the most acceptable policies.

About the Author
Ayad Akhtar is a screenwriter, playwright, actor, and novelist. He is the author of a novel, American Dervish, and was nominated for a 2006 Independent Spirit Award for best screenplay for the film The War Within. His plays include Disgraced, produced at New York's Lincoln Center Theater in 2012 and on Broadway in 2014 and recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and The Who & The What, produced at Lincoln Center Theater in 2014. I have systematically set out to read everything that Ayad Akhtar has written, and to see all of his played performed on stage. This play continues his exploration of the relation of America to Islam. In this work, he combines his personal knowledge of Islam, having grown up as a Muslim Pakistani-American and his understanding of finance. This narrative follows the relationship between big money and international terrorism, seen through the eyes of some memorable characters embroiled in a tense hostage situation in Pakistan. As always, Akhtar's writing is laser-focused and eye-opening. The arc of this story shines a light onto the question: "Why do the terrorists hate us?"

Classic Titans Story!

Collects The New Teen Titans (original) issues 39-44 and Annual # 3.

Brother Blood! Deathstroke! The H.I.V.E.! If I didn't know any better, I'd think I was watching "Arrow." (Heh.)
Issues 39-41 The Titans fight Brother Blood and his cult. Also, Kid Flash (Wally West) leaves the team and Dick Grayson gives up being Robin.
Issues 42-44, Annual # 3 - The Judas Contract story - Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke the Terminator, is carrying out the contract to capture the Teen Titans that H.I.V.E. arranged with his (now dead) son, Grant Wilson. Deathstroke has a mole in the Titans, but whose side is she really on? Also, Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing, and Slade Wilson's other son, Joseph, is introduced. His superhero name is Jericho and he has the ability to possess people and control their bodies, sort of like a living Deadman.

One of the best and probably the most famous Titans story.
Fun Fact: Deathstroke the Terminator was created in 1980, four years before the first Terminator movie.

5 stars based on the standards of its day (1983-4). By modern standards, I'd give it a 4 - the dialogue could use a little help. If you're not already familiar with the story (the cartoon doesn't count) don't read Marv Wolfman's and George Perez's introductions until after you've read the story, to avoid spoilers.
The 1988 edition with the big Deathstroke face and the greenish border does not have the glossy paper quality of modern graphic novels. However I saw another edition in a bookstore or a library, perhaps it was this one

The New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract

...where it looks like the inking had been redone... very poorly. Considering the way these are priced now, I would say don't buy it. DC is reprinting the series New Teen Titans Vol. 4 so there's a chance that Volume 7 of the reprints will have this story in it.

The Terra episodes of this Teen Titans: The Complete Second Season were loosely based on this story. Very loosely based.

About the Author
William James Dally is the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor of Engineering at Stanford University and Chief Scientist at NVIDIA Corporation. He and his group have developed system architecture, network architecture, signaling, routing and synchronization technology that can be found in most large parallel computers today. He has many years of experience working in industry and academia, previously holding positions at Bell Labs, Caltech and MIT and consulting for Digital Equipment, Cray Research and Intel. He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the ACM and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous honors including the ACM Eckert Mauchly Award, the IEEE Seymour Cray Award and the ACM Maurice Wilkes Award. He has published over 200 papers in these areas, holds over 75 issued patents and is an author of the textbooks Digital Systems Engineering and Principles and Practices of Interconnection Networks.

Excellent for real world design concepts

This book has some of the best discussions of pin and interconnect issues that I have see. These issues are THE limiting factors with newer chip and system architectures.
His explanation of the models of parasitic capacitance by itself makes it worth buying the book.
Best read in small chunks, this well written book is packed with useful information

A really wonderful book on digital system engineering!

I like this book very much, which has everything about today's high-speed digital system design. Deep submicron design becomes more and more challenging and we have to deal with so many headache problems such as interconnects, clock and power distribution etc. This book provides all of the guidelines and practical solutions about physical design. It is a cool book with low price!

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Gooey Marketing

I love Bukowski, so let me start with that. What I don't like about this collection is the marketing. All the love poems together reads like a gooey mess. I know that most of Bukowski's stuff is rewritten since his death (you can google this - there are plenty of websites on it) and I don't know if that is the case here. But, reading his other poetry books I've always felt his poems are best read as a unified whole - this is unlike other poets who have their great poems standing alone. For Bukowski there is the mix of emotions that comes out from a unified collection on love and loss. Here we just have love, and I just felt one poem after another becomes a gooey mess. Now - this may be my problem and likely is. I just found it too overbearing, too sweet, too precious to have them all together. I threw my book out - this from a Bukowski collector. Yeah, I hated it.

What kind of editor was John Martin...?

Fastidious Bukowski fans should find this collection fascinating. I'll make this brief. You've already heard or read that Buk's original manuscripts were heavily edited by John Martin. Here's the proof. Much of the poetry that appears in this collection is taken from Buk's original manuscripts, and much of what is in this you've already read elsewhere, in the Martin-edited versions. Did Martin's editing improve on the originals? You be the judge.

For the uninitiated: First read through this collection and then try to convince me that Bukowski was some sort of unfeeling, mean-spirited, misogynistic, misanthropic simpleton.
