Fascinating Story, Terrible Book

Jerry Lee Lewis is a fascinating man, given the many dramatic events of his life: a backwoods Louisiana boy catapulted to rock 'n roll fame, who deep down always believed that rock 'n roll was evil and that he was leading himself and his fans to the devil; a restless man who went through multiple marraiges starting in his teens, then fell from public grace and success by marrying the love of his life, his 13-year old cousin Myra; later their son drowned and their rocky marraige fell apart. A tell-all biography from Myra's perspective could have made a great book, but the writer, Murray Silver, mangles her story. At times it is unclear who's perspective the story is being told from: Myra doesn't even show up until several chapters into the book, as it tries to tell Jerry Lee's early story, but the book ends at their divorce. Like a bad children's biography, the book is filled with made up assumptions and thoughts that the writer could not have been privvy to. Silver makes Jerry Lee and Myra, who were uneducated yet passionate and conflicted people, sound imbecilic at times. He also glosses over important events (such as Myra's rape by another man before she got involved with Jerry, Jerry and Myra's summer romance before they got married, and the drowning death of their son), while devoting page after plodding page to such boring events as Jerry getting ripped off by unscrupulous agents who took advantage of his naivite.

So judge for yourself. If you really want to know the details of Myra and Jerry's story, you'll find a lot of them here, but the terrible writing keeps it from touching you, and distorts the story because, again, the writer's constant and inappropriate use of dialect makes everyone involved sound fairly stupid. There is one exception, when Myra describes Jerry Lee's reaction to the birth of his first daughter (born after his son drowned). Jerry Lee at first wouldn't hold or interact with her, but after 2 weeks his heart melted, he held and cared for her all the time he was home, even let the baby sleep in their bed and called his daughter not by her name but "my heart". It is a pity more of the events in the book weren't rendered with this kind of simplicity and compassion. Then we might have been brought closer to the fascinating story of the Killer and the only woman he really loved.

Entertaining biography of rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis. It details his rise from the poverty of rural Louisiana to become a rock and roll legend. Told by his wife of thirteen years, Myra Lewis, the book recounts an insider's view of those early days of rock and roll and of the rise of Jerry Lee Lewis in the annals of rock and roll.

Jerry grew up with his first cousin, Jimmy Lee Swaggart, who in his own right achieved a measure of notoriety, as a prominent preacher and televangelist. Lewis, however, a music lover from early childhood, wanted nothing more than to be a piano playing musician. A backwoods good ole boy, he shocked the country with his antics, topping it all off with his marriage to his thirteen year old cousin, Myra, an act which brought him unwelcome notoriety.

Known for his high energy performances, Jerry Lee Lewis lived hard, played hard, and worked hard at his music. His was a life of which legends are made. This book is an enjoyable, no holds barred narrative of that life.

Children's thinking is inherently fascinating. All of us were children once; many of us have, or expect to have, our own children someday The ways in which children think are both familiar and foreign. We remember some of the ways in which we thought at younger ages and have impressions of the thinking of many other children as well. As adults, we observe that children's thinking seems generally reasonable, and at times surprisingly insightful. At other times, though, children's reasoning leaves us flabbergasted. Why, for example, would an otherwise reasonable 5-year-old insist that pouring water into a differently shaped container changes the amount of water, even after an adult has just told the child that the amount of water is the same as before?

Until recently, many of the most intriguing aspects of children's thinking were inaccessible to our understanding. Philosophers have argued for hundreds of years whether infants see the world as a "blooming, buzzing confusion" or in much the same way that older children and adults do. Only in the past few years, with the development of revealing experimental methods, has the answer become clear. Even newborns see certain aspects of the world quite clearly, and by 6 months of age, infants' perception resembles that of adults. These and other discoveries about children's thinking are the subject matter of this book.

Who would be interested in such a book? Anyone who is curious about children should find interesting observations and ideas in it. Anyone sufficiently motivated to take an undergraduate or graduate course in this area should find a great deal to intrigue the imagination and stimulate further interest in children's thinking and development.

This new edition incorporates many changes. The most obvious is the addition of two new chapters, one on sociocultural approaches to cognitive development and one on the development of social cognition. These new chapters reflect the enormous growth in these areas in recent years. Some material addressing these topics was present in previous editions; in this new edition, this material has been consolidated and a great deal of new material has been added.

The new chapter on sociocultural approaches begins with Lev Semenovich Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which focuses on the influence of social interaction in cognitive development and on the importance of cultural tools, such as language and number systems, in thinking and learning. The chapter also addresses modern developments in sociocultural theory that build on Vygotsky's insights, and contemporary empirical research in the sociocultural tradition, including research about learning in interaction with adults and peers, guided participation in cultural activities, and the use of language as a tool for thinking. Educational implications of sociocultural theories also are emphasized.

The new chapter on social cognition focuses on children's understanding of social information. This is a broad area that includes knowledge about self and others; knowledge about the mind and the mental states that give rise to behavior, such as desire, intention, and belief; and knowledge about the social world, including understanding of social rules and social categories.

All of the remaining chapters have also been revised and updated. Some of the many additions are increased coverage of interrelations between perception and action, an expanded discussion of children's biological concepts, and additional information about the development of language comprehension.

As in previous editions, we have continued to emphasize the practical contributions of research on children's thinking. Some examples that are discussed are techniques for eliciting accurate recollections of events from children who need to testify in court cases, techniques for assessing children's knowledge, and instructional methods for improving reading, writing, and mathematical skills.

Each of us is fortunate to have had a rich and stimulating intellectual environment in which to work during the writing of the book. Many of our colleagues have given generously of their time to help us improve the book. Too much information contradicted itself.

The book had so many quotes from different theorists and sometimes the direction was not clear. I had to use a lot of internet information to try to understand some of the information the book had inside. Some of the data was not clear in the book.

it did not have a hard cover which was very easy to wrinkle up the pages in my backpack

My first thought of this book was that it has almost no illustrations, and if there were any, they were black and white. Also, it did not have a hard cover which was very easy to wrinkle up the pages in my backpack. It was a good choice for me to just rent the book instead of buying one. I recommend this book only if you are okay with not having many illustrations. Even though it was a hefty amount of information, It was definitely really easy to read and very easy to understand. I honestly found myself not using the book as much. Overall all I thought it was an okay read and would recommend to anyone interested in child psyc. The price I paid for this book was reasonable. However, I would only recommend renting this book or buying it used if possible.

It is a great book received it days before class started if you can order your book in advance because if you wait like a couple of days before with the class starts it will come late. In the book you never know how children think it is amazing when you think back about how your children respond say things when they are very young it was amazing. Thanks Amazon you are great for buying my college books and music I appreciate you for what you have done for me a lot of money I brought my books out of my pocket money.TB

Awesome Intro

This book is an awesome intro to Bluecoat devices. It has lots of pics and it's not dry (which is difficult for an IT book). But keep in mind that this is just an intro, not a comprehensive guide. After reading this book (and given some basic networking knowledge), you will be able to set up the proxy and write a full policy for it.

If you wanted to do more complex stuff like SSL decryption using PKI, or something like that. You will probably need to go to their bootcamp, or just mess with the devices a whole lot (like I did :).

But do get this. I know it's expensive but it is worth the money in my opinion.

About the Author

Randall L. Wilber, PhD, is a senior sport physiologist at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado (elevation 1,860 m/6,100 ft), where he oversees the operation of the Athlete Performance Laboratory. He has worked with U.S. Olympic team athletes from a variety of sports and advised them on the scientific and practical aspects of altitude training. Those athletes include Lance Armstrong (five-time winner of the Tour de France, two-time Olympian), Alison Dunlap (2001 World Champion in cross-country mountain biking, two-time Olympian), Mari Holden (2000 World Champion in road cycling, 2000 Olympic silver medallist), Barb Lindquist (world-ranked #1 female triathlete in 2002 and 2003), Hunter Kemper (2003 Pan American Games gold medallist in the triathlon, 2000 Olympian), Michael Phelps (five-time World Champion and five-time world-record holder at the 2003 Swimming World Championships), Apolo Ohno (2002 Olympic gold medallist in short track speedskating), Derek Parra (2002 Olympic gold medallist and world-record holder in long track speedskating), Christine Witty (2002 Olympic gold medallist and world-record holder in long track speedskating, three-time Olympian), and Johnny Spillane (2003 World Champion in Nordic combined skiing, 2002 Olympian).

Dr. Wilber's Research interests include evaluating the effects of altitude training on athletic performance, exercise-induce asthma (EIA) in elite athletes, and the use of ergogenic aids for the enhancement of athletic performance. He has authored scientific papers on the se topics that have been published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, European Journal of Applied Physiology, Sports Medicine, International Journal of Sport Nutrition, and Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Dr. Wilber has co-edited Exercise-Induced Asthma: Pathophysiology and Treatment, published by Human Kinetics in 2002. In addition, he has been an invited speaker at scientific meetings in Brazil, China, and Finland. Dr. Wilber was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in 1998.

Dr. Wilber holds a PhD in exercise physiology from Florida State University, where he conducted research on training and detraining in endurance athletes. Originally from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, Dr. Wilber spent most of his adult life in Florida prior to moving to Colorado in 1993. He has been involved in sports his entire life as an athlete (cross-country and track), coach, and exercise physiologist. Dr. Wilber's hobbies and recreational interests include running, biking, hiking, reading, and photography. He has completed the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race (1999) and the Pikes Peak Ascent Running Race (2000-2002).

Very Technical, not a guide on 'how to' at altitude

This book reads like a scientific paper. It is packed with altitude-study results and technical scientific information and discussion. It seems to mainly conclude that:

Each undividual must use 'trial and error' with respect to how their body responds to altitude, how much time to spend there, when to leave altitude prior to racing, etc.

There is a lot to learn about what exactly happens at the chemical level in your body. But after reading this book you may not be much better off at knowing what to do in your own altitude training, in practical terms.

Good reading about the topic

I have to admit a bias since I worked for Dr. Wilber at one time. But this book is very good at giving the science and practical applications of altitude training to improve athletic performance. Some of the material might be a bit dated, but the basics still hold.

Great reading on nautical history!

I collected the entire set over several years back in the 90's, and read every one of them. If you want to read the broad scope of nautical history for your own pleasure, this is the best possible way to do it!

The volumes are uniformly well written, and very tightly formatted: 170 pages each, with loads of illustrations, so each book is a quick and enjoyable read. Almost every book includes a detailed schematic of an example ship, and some of the schematics are fold-outs.

My first introduction to the set was The Frigates -- excellent writing about a crucial but little-know piece of American history. After that, I was hooked. My other favorites were Fighting Sail, The Armada, The Racing Yachts, and The U-Boats. The weakest books are The Luxury Yachts and The Great Liners (although Liners has the best schematic in the whole series, a gorgeous four-page fold-out of the Normandie). The early histories -- Ancient Mariners, Pacific Navigators, and Vikings, are fascinating reading, too.

A History of the Sea

I am a fan of pirates, nautical, and maritime history so this set was the perfect choice for me. I saw that the seller only had 20 of the 22 books, but I was fortunate enough to get the last 2 elsewhere. The books have great illustrations and go into great detail on each subject. They came used so I had to deal with peeling off a sticker or two, but I didn't mind. These books are printed in the 90's, but they still offer a great level of accuracy and detail into ships, subs, and oceanic travel. If you know someone who loves the sea and wants to learn more about the vessels of old, find them this collection.

Superb collection with general introductions, good color illustrations and well selected themes up to the 1930s. Does not include Indian Ocean or China Sea history, nor the Atlantic and Pacific in World War II, but efinitely worth having in a nautical history library.
