Comprehensive treatment of a theme... reading experience ruined by poor editing
By RunsWhileCan
Pros: Historical facts/anecdotes about the physical nature of light and the psychological/physiological dimensions of color.
Cons: 1) Lack of professional editing. Seems the only editing the text received was using "auto-correct" of a world processing program, leading to inclusion of similar, but wrong words. Examples from a single page (pg. 37) ".. the sky just prior to or after a story has a bluish-gray cast.." "Try arriving well before sunrise if you are shooting dawn scenes because one the sun has crested..." ...for many people (particular people who live in a cold environment..."
2) Many ideas do not apply if you shoot in RAW format.
3) Often unnecessarily verbose.

This book is less technical than books by Bryan Peterson and the the images are not as impressive/treatment of the theme not as artistic as by Brenda Tharp. Both of these authors cover the topics to a sufficient degree, and provide a more enjoyable read. At minimum "Master guide" should have professional editing, better organization of the themes, and higher quality images.

Good read!
By Gene Rodrigues
I purchased this book based on existing reviews along with several other related books on color printing prior to making archival prints. It was a good read and I digested a considerable amout of useful information, some of which I may never need to use. This book did make me aware of solutions to a few problems I had been experiencing earlier. I plan to read it again soon and may give it five stars at that point.

This book is not only a major twentieth-century contribution to Dostoevsky’s studies, but also one of the most important theories of the novel produced in our century. As a modern reinterpretation of poetics, it bears comparison with Aristotle.

Intense Revelations
By Eric Anderson
Bakhtin's critique of Dostoevsky's work has revealed so much more to me about the form of this great author's novels than I would have ever been able to understand for myself. What makes Bakhtin such a masterful theorist is his methodical approach to understanding an author's work discussing the historical influence of form and the critical misinterpretations that have preceded the work. He is so attentive to levels of narration that he is able to identify voices in relation to the author and the other characters. This helps to clarify the structure of the narrative and the many ways we can interpret it. Many people have marvelled at the brilliance of Doestoevsky's work but haven't been able to put their finger on why it is so great. Bahktin not only names the reason, but also gives an incredible amount of thorough evidence as to why this is so in a comprehensible way. The technical theory is easy to understand as he is very careful to define his terms and the reasons he uses them. His survey of the development of literary forms, particularly the carnavelesque is informed and inspiring, but be careful as it is slightly idealistic and, though perfectly relevant, you feel that he is assimilating it a little too easy to his critique of Doestoevsky. The narrative techniques he identifies are not only useful in understanding Doestoevskys work but are incredibly useful in thinking about current authors. This is a very important piece of critical work I have come back to again and again.

A master novelist's work explored by master critic
By A Customer
This book is the ideal introduction to the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin. Bakhtin is becoming established as one of the giants of 20th century literary criticsm, despite his work being unknown in the West until the 1970's. This book is less about Dostoyevsky per se, rather a profound meditation on how Dostoyevsky's art exemplifies the central concern of Bakhtin, the concept of 'dialogism'. This idea defies a simple definition; the book in exploring manifold aspects of it, itself becomes truly dialogic. If you value Dostoyevsky as an artist, require an antidote to the chill winds of modern 'Theory', or simply appreciate genius at work, catch up with one of the best kept secrets in literature

A Problem with Understanding "Demons," (better known as "The Possessed")
By Mary Wilbur
I was trying to read the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of what is also known in English as "The Possessed" and "Devils" and was having no end of understanding what Dostoevsky was trying to do or the way he was doing it. According to "Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics" I was reading "Demons" the wrong way, as well as every other novel of Dostoevsky' I have read. According to Bakhtin, "[a] plurality of independent and unmerged voices and consciousnesses, a genuine polyphony of fully valid voices is in fact the chief characteristic of Dostoevsky's novels. What unfolds in his works is not a multitude of characters and fates in a single objective world, illuminated by a single authorial consciousness; rather a plurality of consciousnesses, with equal rights and each with its own world, combine but are not merged in the unity of the event." (p.6) The result, with the exception of the tacked on ending to "Crime and Punishment," is an open ended novel, that is a novel with no clearly fixed ending as in the novels of Turgenev and Tolstoy. Bakhtin uses them as foils to Dostoevsky.

In the chapter "Characteristics of Genre" Bakhtin introduces the reader to carnivalized literature in history and in Dostoevsky.

Bakhtin also includes a chapter titled "Discourse in Dostoevsky." It includes a very complete discussion of discourse, including Bakhtin's classification of the types of discourse.

This is a very interesting and important book to read for a complete understanding of the way Dostoevsky created his novels, his novellas and some of his short stories. It is also a great introduction to Bakhtin's thought. He is not really a critic or a linguist but a philosopher of language.

This is a must do book for all who are taking anesthesia board exam
By Y. Nagasaka
I have been cherishing this book ever since I got it.
Indeed I love it and it is amazingly well written.
(Questions)
The Questions are all high quality. They include broad coverage of the advanced topics that we need to know to pass the board. I think this book will also help me ask good questions to my residents once I become an anesthesia attending in the near future.
(Answers)
The answers are smartly summarized all through the book. They are not written in a form of just a paragraph, but also contain figures, tables or bullets. For example: Page 373 has a table that summarizes condition (i.e. warfarin, hemophilia, vWD etc) vs. PT/INR, PTT, and more. Page 155 has a table that compares disease (MG, L-E myasthenic synd, myotonic dystrophy and Duchenne) and the responses to different classes of neuromuscular blockades. Most importantly, they are based on literatures that are up-to-date and trustworthy. It helps me learn and memorize important facts that are frequently asked.

Lots of questions but quite a number of errors
By CanGas
It's great to have another question book out there as Hall is becoming quite dated. That being said, there are quite a number of inaccuracies in this book which calls into question the quality of editing. The inhalational anesthesia chapter in particular has quite a few errors in the answer explanations. Almost that entire chapter uses Morgan & Mikhail as its source. Now I like that book but when I'm preparing for boards I would prefer Miller and Barash to be cited (although the latest edition of Barash unfortunately suffers from poor editing).

Edited March 27,2014: On further use of the book, I have decided to improve the rating from my initial 3 stars to 4 stars. I think that this is likely the best question source currently available, closely followed by the M5 Board review online and Hall.

Deep but useful
By Erenio C Santana
you need a lot of time to study for this book. It's quite useful, complete and deep in the anesthesiology material. Some questions mention drug that they are in use nowadays but The Board still considers interesting. I recommend this book if you have time and prepare yourself with intention of passing that test.

The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics, by Da

The #1 New York Times bestseller about the Greatest Generation freshly adapted for the next generation.

For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler.

At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generation—the generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism.

This deeply emotional yet easily accessible young readers adaptation of the award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller features never-before-seen photographs, highly visual back matter, and an exclusive new introduction.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—This adaptation of the adult title The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (Viking, 2013) chronicles the powerful University of Washington crew team that took the gold in Berlin. The book centers on one untrained rower, Joe Rantz, who was working his way through college. The team was guided by the determined UW coach, Al Ulbrickson, whose obstacles to success were the rival rowing team from the University of California, Berkeley, and his own inconsistent rowers. Introductions to figures such as George Pocock, the team's boat builder, are fascinating, and the photos of races and the team help to build an understanding of this unique world. The descriptions of the team's trajectory and their tense races are suspenseful, and readers will be fully invested. Rantz is a relatable underdog. However, the accounts of his struggles and triumphs come at the expense of his teammates, who are relegated to the background, existing only as sketchy, underdeveloped figures. Brown's portrayal of the Olympic games is full of thrilling details, but it's also impersonal, with little insight into the boys' thoughts, and Nazi Germany is mentioned only briefly. A "Who's Who" at the front of the book and a time line and introduction to rowing at the back are helpful and well laid out. VERDICT Those seeking an inspiring true story or a great sports tale will be pleased with this stirring work.—Marian McLeod, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, CT

Review
Accolades for The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation):

- New York Times bestseller
- #1 Pacific Northwest Bookseller Assocation bestseller

"The word teamwork, which can sound humdrum to kids in coaches' droning lectures, doesn't adequately describe the connection shared by the men in that boat in 1936. Illustrated with vintage photos, this moving book offers young people a vivid sense of that shared experience. A Depression-era story with timeless appeal." —Booklist, starred review

"Offering a model of masterful nonfiction writing, Brown expertly balances the leisurely pacing of the protagonists' back stories with the exciting race scenes, related with concrete nouns, lively verbs, and short sentences, selected and adapted for this edition by Mone. Many photographs, an easy-to-read timeline, and notes on "The Art of Rowing," complete with a diagram, add visual appeal. A fine companion to Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken (2014), also about the 1936 Olympics and also adapted for young readers." —Kirkus

"Those seeking an inspiring true story or a great sports tale will be pleased with this stirring work." —School Library Journal

"It becomes almost impossible not to root for such a hardscrabble collection of underdogs as they exhibit hard work, sacrifice, teamwork, and loyalty at every stage of their collective journey to Berlin." —Horn Book

"With a lyrical flair, Brown tells the story of these men in a manner that intersperses the drama of the time period with the emotional and physical turmoil of their lives.  Young adult readers may not understand or even know about the desperation of the Depression, or what it was like at the genesis of Nazi Germany, but the tale of these persistent men, each with their own personal struggle, will entice readers of all ages." —VOYA

Accolades for the adult edition of The Boys in the Boat:
- #1 New York Times bestseller
- 2014 ABA Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year

"A suspenseful tale of triumph." —USA Today

"Evocative, cinematic prose." —Publishers Weekly

"This is Chariots of Fire with oars." —David Laskin, author of The Children's Blizzard

"A great and inspiring true story." —Nathaniel Philbrick, author of Mayflower

"A thrilling, heart-thumping tale." —Timothy Egan, author of The Worst Hard Time

"A robust, emotional snapshot of an era." —James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers

Very well written and an incredible message for kids to hear. So glad they made this Young Reader version.
By jaxon814
My 8-year old son reads a lot of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books and that sort of "book" :/, so it was such a breath of fresh air to introduce him to a book that is SO WELL WRITTEN, and has such a great message of perseverance and overcoming obstacles. The Audience Guide says 4th-7th grade, but I think even younger grades might be ok, especially if parents read it with, or to, their 1st-4th grader, as the subject matter in parts can be a little emotional, and a few concepts would be helpful to pause and talk about. (I wanted to pause and talk about ALL the parts!!) The way the book jumps from Joe's childhood to adulthood every-other chapter might be confusing at first if kids aren't familiar with that literary device. One thing that would have helped this confusion is if the book designer/publisher made the little icon of the rowers under the chapter # (which is ALWAYS the same) different for the chapters that have to do with his youth. For example, only use that crew/boat icon on the chapters about the UW team, but for the other chapters use a different icon/illustration that has to do with his childhood to help guide the reader when there's a time switch.

I have not read the original version, but plan to because this was such a compelling and captivating story. I hope they make a movie out of it, too.

An exciting piece of history brought to life for a young adult audience
By X. Libris
Although I haven't read the full version of this inspiring true story and biography, I didn't feel like I missed anything in this young adult (condensed) version of the book. It has all the drama of excitingly described boat races, as well as the pathos of a difficult childhood.

I grew up about a mile from the Montlake Cut and the Husky Boathouse, where many of the events in this book took place (although my childhood was 20 years later). And I've been to, or near, many of the locations described here, and I found them to be true to the geography and history I know. I have a minor quibble with saying the boathouse is on Lake Washington, when locals would say it's on Union Bay (which is connected to Lake Washington). Also the area where Joe Rantz goes out in a canoe with is fiancée is Foster Slough, which is not named specifically.

I will be recommending this book to the teachers of Washington State history at the school where I am the librarian, as so many aspects of our state history are brought up in this saga: a childhood in various locales around the state, farming, logging, mining, the creation and building of the Grand Coulee Dam, and of course the development of a competitive rowing crew that became the first entry from Washington State in the Olympics, not to mention that they won, much to excitement of our whole state back (and much of the nation) in 1936!

A wonderful book for people of all ages
By Linia
A wonderful book for people of all ages. An easier read for the younger set; however, all of the important messages are still included. It relays the hopes and dreams of those who came from a somewhat common upbringing to the World Stage of sports.

It is the last summer before the big shift to high school for Cass, Jemmie, Ben, and Justin, the neighborhood kids readers first met in Crossing Jordan. Ben worries that their summer break will just be the same-old-same-old until his little brother Cody finds a hat left behind by their mysterious missing uncle. The hat -- is it magic like Cody believes? -- leads the gang to an abandoned building in the woods. Little do they suspect that this old property with a tragic past might just nudge open the door to the future for all of them.

Gr 6–8—During their last summer before high school begins, Cass, Jemmie, Ben, and Justin are all looking for something different. When Ben's younger brother Cody finds a magical fedora that was owned by their missing uncle, things begin to change. The hat leads them to an abandoned building with a tragic history. Despite some reservations, the kids break into the building and find that there seems to be something there for each of them. They nickname their new hangout "Nowhere" and promise to keep their exciting discovery secret. It stays that way until a mishap exposes more about their hideout than they would have guessed. Written from multiple points of view, the book gives each of the characters a chance to weigh in on their summer through their own chapters, but the voices all tend to blend together. The dialogue is often clunky and makes it difficult to really get a grasp of the various personalities. The glimpses of personality that do shine through tend to feel stereotypical. VERDICT Fogelin works to include diversity of experience, but unfortunately, this novel falls flat.—Amanda Augsburger, Moline Public Library, IL

Should really deliver value to young readers
By a human being
The author is a personal friend, so I know the kids and the neighborhood that are the sources of her stories. Having read the previous books in the series, I was excited to get this next installment. I was not disappointed. As they get older, familiar characters encounter more serious challenges and the stronger emotions involved with having to become part of the adult world for the first time.

The most interesting dynamics for me personally were (a) the relationship between the older brother Ben, and the uncle who disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and (b) the younger brother Cody’s shuttling back and forth between the magic of childhood and the hard realities of the adult world. In both cases, the uncle, who is a flawed but colorful character, a man who must face up to his own terrible demons, helps the boys reach the next stage in their maturity and understanding of the world.

What Cody goes through dealing with the “magic” of his hat, brought back a vivid memory of my own childhood at just about that same age, and had a real ring of truth for me. It demonstrated how
well the author understands the inner minds of her kids, and how well she renders deep psychological insights into the process of growing up with humor and kindness.

As this group of kids goes through some very challenging events, all must confront issues that spur growth as each struggles to find their own new identity. Given the richness of plot and characters in this novel, there will be plenty in this book for kids of all ages and circumstances to relate to. This book is smart, insightful, highly entertaining, deeply emotional, and should really deliver value to its young readers while helping them navigate their own passage to adulthood.

Fogelin's Magic Casts a Spell
By Persis R. Granger
In her novel, "Some Kind of Magic," Adrian Fogelin cast a spell that held me captive from one cover to the other. We had peeks into each character's home and family life, which provided me with a deeper understanding about his or her actions and attitudes through out the story. Although the story never lingered on long on the family situations, in true Fogelin fashion, the glimpses remind the reader that kids whose backgrounds are not "Cleaverish" have importance in our society. They count and care and accomplish. These insights contributed to the uplifting and inspiring quality of this book. Kids need to see characters like this - like themselves - in novels.
The intensity that the changing point of view provided upped the stakes for me, and took me deeper into the carefully-crafted story. For me, the transition from one POV to anther was seamless and natural. I was engaged, and each character remained unique and consistent throughout. The technique worked for me. I found myself nodding yes, yes, yes during most of my reading of not only thise novel, but the Kirkus review of it, found at https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/adrian-fogelin/some-kind-of-magic/. Outstanding. It was some kind of book!

Story lacks depth
By The Write Edge
Four friends intent on enjoying their last summer before high school find a secret hideout. Their ringleader is determined to make it a special place for the group, but when his little brother finds a mysterious hat that shares information by magic the friends start to wonder whether they’re in over their heads. Author Adrian Fogelin gives teen readers this promising but lagging plot in her latest book Some Kind of Magic.

Cass faces her last summer before high school with trepidation. She doesn’t want anything to change, especially between her and her “sort-of” boyfriend, Ben. Her best friend, Jemmie, has no qualms; in high school, she knows, she’ll get a chance to join the track team and make a mark for herself. Ben, too, is eager for change and doesn’t want to spend his entire summer shooting hoops; his best friend, Justin, just wants to keep his life together while his parents fight it out every day.

The four friends, along with Ben’s younger brother, Cody, start their vacation the way they start every summer—with impromptu basketball games and visiting one another’s houses. Just shy of seven years old, Cody knows he’s old enough to hang out with the “big kids” but often gets relegated to the role of bystander. One day as the big kids play a game of girls versus boys, he decides to go home instead of chasing the ball when it rolls out of bounds. When his mother offers him the chance to do some chores, Cody finds a hat that arrests his attention.

The hat belonged to Paul, the uncle who used to live with his family and years ago disappeared without a word. Cody puts on the hat and gets the sense that it wants to tell him something. He starts receiving messages that he knows the hat wants to share.

In the meantime Ben coaxes the others into going exploring, and they approach the woods. Despite repeated warnings from all of their parents to stay away from the area, Ben leads his friends into the middle of the trees. There they find the remains of a house that burned down in the past.

While the house no longer stands, the detached garage managed to escape whatever tragedy befell the family. Ben knows he and the others need to claim the garage as their summer hideout. Cody’s hat sends a message to proceed with caution, but Ben chooses to ignore it. What does a seven-year-old know about the boredom of summer anyway, he argues. Despite everyone’s reluctance, Ben forges ahead with his plans. As he and Justin start to investigate the origins of the house, though, he realizes it may share a connection with his family.

Author Adrian Fogelin gets the tone of teenagers mostly right, although readers will spend the first several chapters getting used to the alternating points of view. Each of the four friends gets to narrate a section of the book in first person, which will keep readers guessing at the start of that section until the identity of the narrator becomes clear from the context. Cody’s sections come in third person, and these parts of the book flow much better. Fogelin would have achieved more successful pacing if she’d kept all of the characters in the third person point of view.

Also, while Fogelin does an excellent job of setting the temperature for her story—all four kids manage to come up with inventive ways to describe the punishing summer heat—readers won’t know until more than halfway through the book that it’s set in Tallahassee. The location may not prove significant, but with so many people commenting on how hot it is readers will definitely begin to wonder where the characters live.

The mystery of Uncle Paul does get somewhat of a resolution, although incomplete, and while each character’s feelings remain clear their life stories don’t. Fogelin offers readers just enough to make readers wonder how these friends got into their specific situations in the first place. As is often the case in YA fiction most of the adults remain in the background, leaving the story lacking.

I recommend readers Bypass Some Kind of Magic.
