I expected Rangle River to be one long story but it is a number of excellent short western stories - some of them could have been the source of a much longer western. The last section is a very good description of a journey in the West - an excellent piece of writing by Zane Grey.

Short Works from the Master Story-teller

Rangle River, the title story from this collection is set in Australia and is a good 'cowboy' story, and as with most of ZG's shorter works he intensifes his characterizations. It's a good story, and probably the outline for his novel, The Great Trek. In a slightly differing form, Amber's Mirage, the other short novel was used as a prologue or the background for two other Zane Grey novels, but it stands well alone. There are two first hand accounts of Zane Grey's travels in this collection as well--Don: the story of a dog; and Nonnezoshe, a story detailing Zane Grey's trip to the Rainbow Bridge and through Monument Valley, a trip which inspired his early works--Riders of the Purple Sage and The Desert Crucible. You will meet the Mormons and the Indians who taught ZG about the west, and meet fictional characters you will want to read about again, and again. Whether fiction or non-fiction Zane Grey can not be beat when it comes to description of times, places, or people. I highly recommend this book.

A quality paperback

I am stoked! The type in Dorchester's Rangle River is clear and sharp on good, thick paper. This is the best-looking printing job I've seen on a paperback book for a long time, and I have read hundreds of paperbacks in my eight years in Thailand.

I was pleased to find an informative and nicely written author biography. Grey's wife Lina was his editor, collaborator, and business manager.

I haven't seen a misspelled word yet in Rangle River. That would be unusual for any book -- rare, anyway. There are no widows. The words and letters are not crowded. Someone did a good job of designing this book.

Zane Grey is a consistently fine author. I would not put these stories in a class with Riders of the Purple Sage, but they have their charm. Real people, real feelings.

These are stories you could read out loud to young people who want to learn about Western cowboys and prospectors. They might spark discussions about greed, loyalty, love, honesty and any deep feelings that need to be shared.

As it happened, he was shot dead at point blank-range in broad daylight by a lone assassin - a well-respected newspaper editor from Poona - who had travelled 800 miles to New Delhi to accomplish his 'mission of no mercy'. It reveals how the two other joined him, and stood close by his victim to witness their comrade's – what the assassin called his - “holier-than-thou act”.

How did the great Mahatma react, when he came face to face with his assassin, and saw him, pointing his revolver at him? Why did the assassin push aside one of the two women, walking with the saintly man before shooting him dead? The book truthfully answers these questions and many other, hitherto unknown to the outside world. It also deals with Gandhi murder trial by revealing, for the first time, the 'real motive' of the assassin, and what he said in the court to justify his gruesome act, and reveals the 'victim's last words', which only the assassin could have heard, as he stood just a few feet away from his victim before he took his last breath and collapsed on the prayer ground.

The saintly old man saw him as the defender of all faiths, and the world hailed him as a true messenger of peace. But in the end, this preacher of non-violence met his death by violence. India gained its independence by his non-violent struggle for almost three decades, ending 200 years of British Rule, but at the cost of one-and-a-half million Indians in the communal holocaust that engulfed India during its partition in August 1947.

Wonderful entertainment

Loved every second of this book. Having read the whole series (so far) I think this is the best one. Actually, each one has been great and progressively better than the one before.
It's the type of book that make you wish it would go on forever ... The kind that grips you and keeps you guessing right until the end.

Loved it

Maggie Phillips is a full time everything to everyone and there are days when it is just enough and others over the top too much. She adores her family and could not ask for a better husband but maybe he could a little less than perfect like her occasionally, please. But with her cleaning business moving along at a snail’s pace the latest job seems like it will be long term and interesting. Sarah needs to clean out the remnants from her grandfather’s home and Maggie is going to do her best to keep the good memories and purge the bad ones. Her friend Sylvia is always there to hold the trash bag open and offer advice but what Maggie needs is to control her own self more and others a little less.

As she moves through the piles of left overs Maggie discovers a life that Sarah’s grandfather led that he kept a secret from everyone and Sarah wants Maggie’s help to uncover the mystery of why he was so reclusive. The more Maggie delves into this man’s history the less she likes him and what he may have done. There are friends that are dying from apparent old age but are they really or someone helping them along. She knows that it is not paranoia if someone really is after you, and Maggie has had a lot of people after her for less than honorable reasons.

While Maggie sorts through someone else’s junk she is also deciding where to take her life from the point she is at right now. Does she want another baby, would she like to take on a career with her sons growing up, or is the thought of sharing something unique with her husband all that matters. Well staying alive and not getting into another hole she cannot find a way out of is the most important to do every day of her life, let’s face it she is not the most lucky in some areas of life.

The characters are engaging, the mystery intriguing, and the story line never stops moving which is just a few of the reasons I love to read a book written by Jennifer Hart. I admit to complete reader disclosure that Maggie is my favorite character because of her imperfection and complete love of cleaning.

Another laugh out loud mystery

Maggie and the gang are back in the third installment of this laugh out loud cozy mystery series from Jennifer L. Hart. "Uncle Scrooge" is still trying to pinch pennies as she and Sylvia: her next-door- neighbor/ brother's landlord/ "partner in grime" are helping a customer Sarah Dale, clear out the clutter of her grandfather's estate while dealing with psychic terrorism from relatives, friends, and....a ghost? AND a new niece....and an older son teetering on teenager-ness...

At times reminiscent of a "ScoobyDo Mystery", this laugh-out loud story deals with the past, the present and leaves the future for..... a whole new set of questions. One of the best things about this is we get some backstory/ history on the whole family, warts and all....that is, if the dog doesn't love it to death first!

Bring on Number 4!

About the Author
Roger Koenker is McKinley Professor of Economics and Professor of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 1976 to 1983 he was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. He has held visiting positions at The University of Pennsylvania, Charles University, Prague, Nuffield College, Oxford, University College London and Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society.

new views for modern data

Modern data are plentiful and, as always, complicated. Yet the demand for interpretations and explanations are ever more urgent. There's a pressure to do more in less time.

Quantile regression is based upon a reinterpretation of the least squares method, providing a flexible means of doing data analysis. Rather than seeing a dataset as a "signal contaminated with noise", it suggests all the effects recorded there are worthy of study, if only to understand processes which interfere with primary measurements.

In cases of complicated observations and datasets, it promises to serve as a powerful tool.

Prior to purchase, I recommend Koenker, Hallock, J.Econ.Perspectives 15(4), 143-156, Fall 2001, and especially Cade, Noon, Frontiers Ecol. Environ 2003, 1(8), 412-420 as previews.

I look forward to indulging myself with the text.

Great book - But severe typos in the Kindle edition at least.

This book is an important reference on quantile regressions. It gives an overview that papers will not easily give you. However, detailed proofs are usually only available in the published papers.

However, I bought the Kindle edition of the book, and there are numerous severe copyediting/typographic problems in the book. For instance, section 4.6.1 has an important sentence that never finishes. Somewhere else in the book the maths get jammed. I have not checked the print edition of the book, but these are severe problems that should have been eliminated with copyediting.

Otherwise, this book is crucial for anybody doing quantile regression analysis.

Resource for any economist

QR is a fascinating and increasingly important tool for any economist (note that I leave of the "-trician"). Especially when we consider heterogenous agent models, the standard techniques of mean-regression seem comparatively mindless. Who better to teach the subject than the man who invented it? He's got an engaging voice and clear pen.
