About the Author
Brad is the Dean Emeritus of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Prior to assuming the position as Dean in 1994, he served as the first Director of the Office of Environmental Education for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. Brad also served as the Acting President of the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation in Washington, D.C., and as a Special Assistant to the EPA Administrator. Before moving to Washington, D.C., Dean Smith was a professor of political science and environmental studies for 15 years, and the executive director of an environmental education center and nature refuge for five years.

Eldon is an emeritus professor of biology at Delta College. He has over 30 years of teaching experience in biology, zoology, and environmental science. Eldon has been a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in Australia and Scotland, received the Bergstein Award for Teaching Excellence at Delta College, and participated in an Earthwatch Research Program in Costa Rica. In addition to the environmental science text, Eldon is co-author of the very successful CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY general biology text with McGraw-Hill.

A Decent Environmental Overview

This text was decent as an intro to environmental issues but lacked depth on some things. In addition there were many typos and grammatical no-no's that were a bit aggravating. The easy practice tests that the publisher provides on their site is rather insulting and was of no value for study purposes.

Good resource, decent read

When you finish this book you are not going to sit back in your chair and think to yourself "Holy @#$%, that was classic!", but you will enjoy the stories and you will find the information shared by the author useful if you are interested in bowhunting the backcountry. I am new to the sport and had read about the author on the internet, so I was excited to buy his book. For the most part I got what I wanted from it so I am not complaining, but at times the book seemed a bit unorganized and a little repetitive in places. But, if you don't try to read it like a novel and more like a bunch of short stories you will likely find it entertaining. Moreover, the author does get my respect for being passionate about his hobby and sitting down to write a book about it. He certainly inspired me to give the sport a try, and without a doubt, I finished the book with more knowledge of backcountry bowhunting than when I started. For that reason alone it was money well spent.

Glad it was free

Oh my, this could have been a good book. But...

(1) The author introduces too many characters too fast, and then refer to some of them by two or more different names. It takes forever to sort out who is who, and that (for example) "Tobias," "Toby" and "Shelton" are the same person. Irritating at the least.

(2) The heroine's brothers, cousins and hopeful suitor discover a dastardly bet regarding the heroine in White's betting book. Do they warn her that two cads have bet that one of them will successfully seduce her? Noooo. And then she wonders why the brothers et al are falling all over themselves trying to keep the cads away from her. She even accepts an invitation to a picnic from the worst of the two. She ends up in a dangerous situation because of that picnic, which would have been completely avoidable if she had known that he was not to be trusted. Categorize this as one of those tiresome "huge intractable problem" plot devices that could have been solved with one simple conversation.

(3) The heroine holds onto a ridiculous pact made in her childhood with her two best friends. Keeping true to a silly agreement made before the age of reason is more important to her than acknowledging and accepting the love of a truly decent man. What? How dumb is this chick?

(4) A key plot point hinges around the heroine flinging herself onto a spirited horse and riding to the rescue, even though previously it was well-documented earlier in the book that she does not like horses, and she does not like riding. And then all of a sudden she can ride like a Valkyrie? I don't think so....

(5) Some other reviewers have expressed doubt about a wallflower suddenly blooming. I agree - it certainly is not impossible for a self-doubting person to gain confidence, but it does not happen overnight.

So glad this book was free.

I stopped reading it.

I tried. I really tried to finish it but I was just too exhausted. There were so many names and characters to keep track of. I still can't tell you who all were siblings, who were cousins, and who were couples. I guess some of them appeared in other books; many more of them will appear in future books.

My biggest complaint is that you land smack-dab in the middle of a relationship five years in the making. It seriously took them this long to finally "see" the other person?

The heroine is an overweight, on the shelf woman who lacks self-esteem and self-worth. The hero is supposed to be a charming, pacifist type nice guy who has secretly lusted after the heroine for quite some time. Her brother is married to his sister. One day, he realizes that he needs money. The heroine's dad is dropping dollars on her dowry in order to entice some gentleman to marry her. Bam! Her brothers think this dude would be perfect for their sister so they plot to get them together. I don't know, but I felt betrayed reading the antics and comments made by her brothers and cousins. I just never felt like there was a connection between the hero and heroine; it was all about necessity for the both of them.

Small Spoilers
I didn't like the fact that I learned the color of the hero's hair in the second half of the book. I didn't like the fact that you learn towards the end of the book that the heroine had a previous lover. I just gave up on it towards the end. As another reviewer mentioned, the concept was good, but the execution was poor.

Boring read with way too much emphasis on graphic scenes..

This book was tolerable. The writing was okay, but nothing to write home about. The characters were moderately likable, the male more than the female. It seemed that the story was long, drawn out and very boring and then bam, there would be an overly graphic sex scene. What happened to romance, to dialogue to suspense and angst? This book seemed to lack the good story telling and language and was really reduced to a cheap thrill. Not for me, and not for me to recommend.

Neil Rackham is founder and former president of Huthwaite, Inc. Huthwaite researches, consults, and provides seminars for more than 200 leading sales organizations around the world, including Xerox, IBM, and Citicorp. His academic background is in research psychology. It was at the University of Sheffield, England, that he began his research into sales effectiveness that resulted in SPIN. Rackham is the author of more than 50 articles and several books.

Built To Last Major Account Sales Strategy

Unlike most developers of major account sales strategy, Neil Rackham methodically backs up his analysis of the buyer circle with in-depth research. To develop his major account sales strategy, Rackham has observed and analyzed a large number of high dollar value sales made around the world. Rackham convincingly shows that effective selling strategy is built on a thorough understanding of customers and the concerns they can have at each phase of a sale. Mastering that strategy, of course, requires, a lot of hard work and practice from salespersons determined to make the difference at the end of the day. Rackham successively reviews these phases that he has identified as: account entry strategy, recognition of needs, evaluation of options, resolution of concerns, sales negotiation, as well as implementation and account development.
1. In analyzing "Account Entry Strategy", Rackham successively explores the focus of receptivity, the focus of dissatisfaction, and the focus of power as well as the pitfalls associated with them. Because coaching, in our culture, has a positive connotation, few professionals will turn down the chance to demonstrate to a fellow professional their expertise and the usefulness of their connections. For that reason, successful salespeople identify, nurture, and leverage their sponsor(s) to ultimately get access to the different buying influences. Because of possible shifts in the account on the buyer side, Rackham rightly recommends that no salesperson rely on only one individual to penetrate an account. Rackham also reminds his audience about the critical importance of uncovering implied needs to turn them into expressed needs. In looking at "Recognition of Needs" and "Evaluation of Options", Rackham first briefly explores his SPIN questioning strategy that is explained in a luxury of details in his other book "SPIN Selling." Basically, successful salespeople usually first ask the buyer situation questions, secondly problem questions, thirdly implication questions, and finally need-payoff questions to uncover implied needs for turning them into expressed needs that require action. Rackham also reminds his audience that successful salespeople prepare their sponsor(s) to help these sponsor(s) sell the sellers' solution in their own words if they are denied access to the focus of power. Furthermore, successful salespeople not only help the buyer identify needs but also influence him/her in the definition of the differentiation factors and their perceived importance to sort out the different options being offered to him/her. Rackham urges his audience to keep a broad definition of competition in mind. Finally, Rackham explores the three strategies that can help salespeople overcome their vulnerabilities and the dangers associated with these strategies: 1. Change the decision criteria (overtaking, trading-off, redefining, or creating alternative solutions), 2. Increase their strength through correction of misunderstanding or negotiation, and 3. Diminish the competition directly or indirectly.
3. In examining "Resolution of Concerns", Rackham reviews the hidden and expressed concerns that can push buyers to get "cold feet" in the decision-making process leading to an eventual purchase order down the road. As Rackham pertinently observes, price is often a convenient excuse that the buyer uses to hide his/her other, real concerns from the salesperson. Successful salespeople need to leverage their relationship with the buyer for uncovering the eventual areas of concerns, clarifying these concerns, and helping the buyer resolve them. Finally, Rackham warns salespeople about the three deadly sins of handling concerns: 1. Minimizing 2. Prescribing and 3. Pressuring.
4. In investigating "Sales Negotiation", Rackham first reminds his audience about the importance of making a clear difference between selling that tends to focus on buyers' perception of problems and negotiating that tends to concentrate on the cost of the solution. Addressing concerns about the solution with discounts will only weaken the position of the salesperson when the time of negotiation comes. As mentioned above, price is often used as a smokescreen. Rackham then reminds his audience that the only things successful salespersons negotiate during the Recognition of Needs or the Evaluation of Options phases of the sale are the needs or requirements of the buyer that they cannot meet in order to minimize the probability that they are out of the sale. Rackham finally observes that successful negotiators focus on areas of maximum leverage instead of over-concentration on price reduction, establish and narrow ranges, plan and use questions, separate understanding from agreement, and rigorously test for misunderstanding.
5. In dissecting "Implementation and Account Development", Rackham rightly reminds his audience that successful salespeople do not rest on their laurels after getting the order. They are deeply involved in the implementation of the solution adopted to increase the probability that the buyer successfully overcomes the motivation dip reflecting his/her evolving enthusiasm about that solution over time. Furthermore, Rackham pertinently stresses the importance of account development instead of account maintenance. Finally, Rackham also observes that successful salespeople document their successes, generate leads and references, reassess their understanding of customer needs, and influence future decision criteria.
Rackham wraps up his analysis of major account sales strategy with a case study built on his research to put the concepts mentioned above into practice for the benefit of his audience.
As a side note, a good strategic complement to the "Major Account Sales Strategy" is "The New Strategic Selling" by Stephen E. Heiman, Diane Sanchez, and Tad Tuleja. Like the former, the latter focuses on the strategy towards high dollar value sales.

The pitfalls await the uninformed sales person; read this!

What are the focus of receptivity, the focus of dissatisfaction, and the focus of power? If you don't know, a set of nasty surprises awaits you as a sales person. As you seek entry into accounts to which you are expected to sell, you will find it's a cold, cold world out there, more than ever. Entering a new account and successfully turning it around can take forever--or a shorter time if you work smarter, not harder.

Neil Rackham's book deals head-on with the issues of breaking into and selling to accounts that are "negative"--that is to say, buying from your competitor. But you can find the chinks to work your way in and find mutual benefits. Chances are, there is dissatisfaction in some area--with a competitor, with a technology, with a situation. The knowledgeable sales person can find the dissatisfied parties and influence them to take action. The result--sales for you and an improved situation for them.

I found the book particularly good at identifying stages of the sale, in ways different from the traditional Xerox-style selling. For example, the stages are broken down into an implementation-resolution cycle, where, after needs are recognized, option are evaluated, concerns are met (objections, in old-speak) and finally a decision is made. You, as the salesperson, are shepherding the process with the decision makers and influencers through this cycle. So it pays to know where you are sitting in each stage of the cycle in order to present the right information to your client.

This book is not hard to understand, and is well-organized. If ound it interesting and valuable reading, and think it belongs on any the major account manager's bookshelf.

Excellent book: stresses the importance of the Buying Cycle

When told by my boss that I should read the book, I initially resisted. I bought it before the days of Amazon.com - it took about a month for the bookstore to order it and get it in stock. Then I went to the store and picked it up. Once I opened it up, I found it facinating. I read it in 2 days and still tell others involved in selling what a terrific book it is. Neil Rackham doesn't preach about what a genius in the art of selling he is. Instead he takes you on an interesting tour of some of his consulting work with field sales people. He describes what works and what doesn't, contradicting some "conventional wisdom" along the way.
If you're involved in major account sales, read it. I think you'll be glad you did.

I came accross this book in Amazon site and preview was undertaken , then I came to know that this book has valuble content. Immediately , I ordered for this book. I have gone through first 4 chapters and convinced that there is conceptual clarity.we need not search for required matter, because all reqired things are hilighted in the book. It is useful forthe novice and experienced in application of IFRS principles. I recommend thi book to all those dealing with financial statements .

Loved getting additional background, great story

I have just recently signed up for a service that alerts me when favorite authors release new publications --- and am I so glad I did! Without it, I wouldn't have found this wonderful little gem as I wasn't looking for a new publication until next fall.

My experience with the vast majority of other short stories published in other series hasn't been all that great. Usually the emphasis should be on the word "short" as most of them are only about half of the download and the rest an advertisement for their upcoming book. The other thing I have noticed is that the stories are usually just "ok" at best which I am going to attribute to novelists writing in a format with which they are not familiar. That being said, I love this series so much that I was willing to take anything I could get to tide me over until October when the next full-length novel comes out.

Imagine my surprise to find this ended up being a novel in miniature. All 66 pages are just like the novels - story, glossary, Kinky's notes. Not a bit of filler to be found. In the author's notes at the beginning of the story, Mr. Taylor explains a bit about why he wrote it and views it as a gift to his readers (not free, but at a very nominal price). I have to agree whole-heartedly.

While it is short, I was able to settle into the story and get into a flow. It gives some backstory we have not been privy to as readers such as how Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly came to be at Ballybuklebo and how his first few days went in the new practice. Hint: Bertie Bishop was a pain in the you-know-what from day one!

For fans of the series, I would highly recommend reading this wonderful story though it will only whet your appetite for the next one. Thank goodness I only have to wait six months from this point. Loved it and a huge "thank you" to the author.

Loved It!!

I'm sad it's only a bit-longer-than-short story, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I still remember picking up the Country Christmas book in December of '11 not knowing what it was about and now it's May of '13 and I still can't get enough of Mr. Taylor's characters.

This was a great story and I really loved hearing about Dr. O'Reilly' s beginning in Ballybucklebo. Now to wait until October for the next book....

Fascinating Look Inside Physician Culture

[I purchased this book upon its initial release at Amazon.ca, and read and wrote about the Canadian release; below is a modified version of that review.]

I initially spoke with Dr. Goldman at the time he was preparing this book, discussing some of my own professional experiences with medical jargon, so I'll admit to some bias in this review. To be honest, I was initially expecting a book focused on humor and more of a descriptive "glossary" of jargon. The author gave me a great surprise, however: a book that was not only descriptive, interesting, and an easy read (and certainly with no small portion of comedy), but one which is likely to be as thought provoking to each of us within the medical field as those first being introduced to the secret language described here.

The book is generally divided into sections of different focuses of slang: a chapter on obese patients, one on patients who commonly return to the hospital ("frequent flyers"), even one on medical professionals' references to one another. There's an entire chapter on obstetrics & gynecology jargon, the group I'm least familiar with; this was one of the few "outsider's views" I was able to take from the book, and it remained as fascinating to me as the discussion of terms I knew well. There's no question patients and families will benefit from and be intrigued by this book, not only obtaining the knowledge of some otherwise misunderstood terms, but recognizing the culture which leads to their creations.

I am most amazed, however, by Dr. Goldman's ability to describe that culture to fellow healthcare workers, and in doing so to encourage self-reflection among those of us in the field. Make no mistake, this "secret language" isn't a simple explanation of what we mean as much as an indirect view into our mindsets, into the industry and culture in which we're so embedded. From the interactions we have with one another describing patients to those complaining about colleagues, the easy recognition of the professional and systemic problems prompted by Goldman's book was more insightful than I'd ever have imagined. I will be a better surgeon for having read it.

I expected a humorous look at terms I hear every day---but was left with a description of medical culture that has led me to rethink relationships with patients and colleagues. I look forward to re-reading this book, and always to Goldman's next one.

What appears to be a VERY jaundiced view of medicine.

I purchased this book after seeing Dr. Goldman's TED talk which I found quite impressive. I was also impressed by this book, but not in a positive way. I have been quite interested in medical culture since my son began Med School and have read just about everything I have been able to get my hands on about medical training and how med students integrate into medical practice. He is now a senior resident and, after reading this book, I hope and pray that the world of medicine - the world my son is now immersed in - is nowhere near as dysfunctional as Dr. Goldman portrays it. I find it very difficult to believe that Medical professionals can be as cynical and jaded as this book would lead one to believe. Nothing else I have read remotely suggests that it is, and I cannot imagine anyone surviving a career in the kind of toxic atmosphere Dr. Goldman presents. My strong suspicion is that Dr. Goldman has hyped a good bit of what is in this book for his own purposes. I cannot recommend this book in any way.

I'm kind of speechless right now. Okay, let me try to put into words how great this book was. I'm kind of reeling from the ending so I hope I can find the words..."The List" is what makes this book for me. The list is what brings someone special into her life, what motivates her & what will give her a new life. I won't tell you what the list exactly is... but it was amazing. Sweet and steamy. A good combo! So, ... I am giving this book 5 stars!! Read it! Read it!
It's a romance novel but so much more. I really enjoyed getting to know Elle and everything that she has endured, but is trying to overcome. And the list??? You need to know the list!!

Buyer Beware

I don't appreciate being tricked into buying the end of this book. I downloaded this book from a website that alerts you of free kindle books. It looked interesting. Once I got into it, I kept reading just for the sake of finishing something I started. The writing was mediocre at best. When the book FINALLY had some decent conflict in the story arc, the book ends and you are prompted to BUY book 2. I have never seen anything like this. Again, I didn't appreciate the manipulation by the author. Idea...brush up on your writing skills, and your books - priced from the start will sell themselves.

Part 1 --so you will have to purchase part II

Didn't appreciate the fact that this was a part one of 2 books, and just dropped off in the middle of an exciting scene. Would never have gotten this book. The writing was ok, and book 1 was interesting, but will not read this author again because of this. I don't mind buying a book, but don't want to be forced to purchase a part II to finish the original book.

Decent read but it sucks that it cuts the story short and to find out what happens you have to buy another book! Throughout the story line its building to make you want to know then it's not there. Very disappointing to say the least.
