Farce meets gothic trappings in small Irish town
By Booked for life
I bought this book expecting it to be full of gothic and mystery elements, having read other LeFanu.

I have read LeFanu's ghost stories, and the novels "Uncle Silas," and "Wylder's Hand." "Uncle Silas" is a suspense classic. "Wylder's Hand" is less of a page-turner, but has interesting characters in the mystery. Think of Dicken's "Mystery of Edwin Drood" with Wilkie Collins's dominant female characters.

"House by the Churchyard" starts with graves, re-opened crypts, and mystery. LeFanu promptly drops it to pile farce upon farce.

Much of the book relates how the residents of this small town wage "war" on each other, similar to "Lucia and Mapp." Set in the 1700s, in a small town near Dublin, featuring officers in the local regiment, the book brings high and low characters together.

There is a wealthy spinster whose charities are ill-considered. There is a mysterious stranger who has moved to town, who is surrounded by further shadows. Chapter 11 is frequently taken and printed as a ghost story--in the context of the book, the story is an extended example of how servants chatter.

We have lovers, competing small-town doctors, fortune-hunters, nubile and not-so-nubile heiresses, a professional blackmailer, debtors, rapscallions, timid lovers, a priest, an unworldly pastor, an amateur blackmailer, and some nice rabbitty little wives who are under the thumbs of their "lord and master" husbands. There is a hilarious duel-gone-wrong and drowning that never really happens.

The introduction suggests that LeFanu wrote "House by the Churchyard" out of nostalgia for the town he lived in as a youth. I think that this book is better characterized as English humor, a la "Three Men in a Boat," than as English horror. It is very readable.

I'm about half-way through, and I have found that the humor/horror ratio is about 80/20. I suppose there are still plenty of chapters in which to pack his murder mysteries towards the end.

"House by the Churchyard"--It's a wild read, for fans of Dickens, Collins, even "Lucia" novels.

Neither gothic nor mysterious
By jaydynomite
Billed as being a supernatural thriller, this awkward novel fails to be a murder mystery, ghost story, and gothic work simultaneously. It has elements of all three, but lacks any true sense of identity. There are a few minor instances of the paranormal, but nothing relating to the plot. There is no lingering dread, no menacing villain, and no fair damsel in distress. In fact, there is barely a mystery at all, and certainly not one worth caring about.
Basically, this novel is a boring jumble of stereotypical characters spreading gossip amongst themselves in a parody of Dickens' sadly wordy and overrated style.

LeFanu is better at the short story medium
By Jason C. Eckhardt
LeFanu is better at the short story medium. His affection for the setting of the novel, in a small town outside Dublin, is clear in every line; but the novel rambles into and out of vignettes and different characters. I found it hard to finish-a shame as I am a big fan of his short works. Admirers of "Carmilla" and "Green Tea" might want to avoid this.

The Orange Fish: Stories, by Carol Shields

Winner of the Marian Engel Award: Passion, longing, regret, and transformation infuse these twelve tales by one of our most “shrewd and skillful” storytellers (Chicago Tribune)
“Milk Bread Beer Ice” is a road trip shared by a husband and wife who no longer communicate through meaningful dialogue. Fifty-year-old “Hazel” is forced to enter an alien workplace after the sudden death of her husband. In “Today Is the Day,” the village women gather together for their annual ritual of planting blisterlilies. And “Family Secrets” travels to DeKalb, Illinois, and the First World War, as the narrator searches for a missing year in her mother’s life . . . and unearths a surprising connection to Ernest Hemingway.
From a group of musicians who discover they share more than classical “Chemistry” to an unhappily married couple who may get a second chance, this remarkable collection, like the ageless orange fish of the title story, is filled with the wonder and magic of everyday life.

From Publishers Weekly
Although a variety of well-realized voices animate the 12 stories in Shields's fine collection, they are all plainspoken and direct--the hallmarks of her sturdy prose. All stories except three are set in her native Canada; most have as protagonists people locked into themselves, suffused with nostalgia, regret, incommunicable longing--and sometimes fulfilled by flashes of communication and tentative hope. In several stories, ordinary people undergo metamorphosis: in the title piece, a couple who acquires a lithograph of an orange fish is suddenly accepted into a charmed circle; in "Chemistry" another group is bonded in a magical way by a shared interest; "Hazel" is a widow who acquires job skills and confidence and expects to take control of her destiny--only to discover that "her life is an accident and she has blundered into the heart of it." The most distinctive story is "Collision," which hinges upon the notion that the earth's atmosphere is composed of the "biographical debris" of everyone who has ever lived. Shields's narrative method is suggested in one tale as "the way a human life drains toward one revealing scene." The author of the accomplished novel Swann should widen her audience with these perceptive tales.

From Library Journal
In this collection of 12 short stories, Shields focuses on ordinary men and women and the everyday events of their lives: travel, holidays, work, relationships. The first story, "The Orange Fish," concerns a couple whose stale marriage is revived by the purchase of a lithograph of an orange fish. There is a certain magic to this tale, which sets up an expectation that is not fulfilled by the remainder of the stories. In these stories, which fail to ignite the imagination or present a fresh perspective, none of the characters is memorable or even sympathetic and plots are virtually nonexistent. Shields pays far too much attention to detail, expressed in florid language; one can almost imagine her at work, Roget's in hand. The reader is often left wondering, "What was the motivation behind this story? Why should I care?" A disappointing work.

Review
“Infused with a sly humour, these poignant stories revel in the ordinary, with a few side trips to the sublime . . . both moving and wry.” —The Washington Post
“Carol Shields deals in profound issues of human experience, drawing them from everyday existence with vulnerable honesty and a good dose of pain-killing humor.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Some of the most complex accounts of human nature I’ve read in a short story.” —San Francisco Chronicle
“Reading [these stories] gives you a sense of art spilling over into life. . . . Even the briefest and apparently arbitrary details of life seem incandescent.” —Toronto Star

Each Story a Little World
By Short Story Fan
Each book that I read by Carol Shields only strengthens my admiration. "The Orange Fish", a collection of short stories, is my recent discovery. Although one of her earliest collections, it still bears her signature mark of strong, daring prose/poetry that draws you into the individual worlds of each story. Most of the stories deal with simple, daily occurrences, with every truthful word Carol Shields invites the reader to enter. You feel as if you are interacting with the characters and talking with Kay about her troubled marriage over a cup of tea in "Times of Sickness and Health." You root for the success of Marta's glass-blowing movies in "Collision." You sympathize with Meershank's writer's block in "Block Out." In effect, as the reader, you inhabit the individual world of each story and want to stay longer. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read about ordinary people reflected through the mirror of powerful prose.

A Great Collection
By Melanie
This collection was much better than I expected. Many of the stories in the dozen that make up the collection touched me, made me think, and changed how I look at a few important things in life. The first story, the Orange Fish, was very interesting and I loved the many messages and interpretations that the lithograph brought out in the different characters. The couple in this story undergoes a metamorphosis because of their purchase of a lithograph of an orange fish; the idea that a purchase can tranform a marriage seems preposterous, but Shields makes it believable. 'Hazel' was another one of my favourite stories, about a widow who acquires job skills and confidence and expects to take control of her destiny and realizes that much of what happens in her life and in the lives around her occurs by accident. Another story, 'Times of Sickness and Health' struck a chord with me, as it has a precise poetic quality to it and a magical element.

From Library Journal
Frierson, formerly with The Hawaii Observer , combines cultural and natural history with a compelling personal narrative. She takes the reader on an informative hike through the Volcanoes Region of Hawaii, sacred to Native Hawaiians as the dwelling place of Madame Pele, goddess of volcanoes. Frierson unearths still-extant cultural beliefs and traditions (hula and chants) performed to propitiate Pele as Kilauea Volcano enters its eighth year of continuous eruption. The area is of equal importance to vulcanologists, who study the relatively benign, though complex, nature of these volcanoes. Unfortunately, controversial geothermal development threatens to exploit the delicate balance of nature and culture, as well as destroy the last surviving lowland rain forest in the United States. Frierson examines the underlying issues of cultural attitudes toward nature from scientific and native Hawaiian viewpoints. Highly recommended for general and Hawaiiana collections, and useful for travel collections too.

Based on the author's own experiences, this award-winning novel was the first to tell the story of the evacuation, relocation, and dispersal of Canadian citizens of Japanese ancestry during the Second World War.

The silence that DOES speak
By C. E. Stevens
When I finished Obasan, I felt blown away. This is not just a great piece of Japanese Canadian literature, this is a great book, period. The Internment of Japanese American/Canadian citizens during World War II is a subject that is widely unknown, and a topic that few novelists have been able to capture with as much skill as Kogawa.
"Obasan" weaves a seamless tale that stretches between generations and spans continents and decades with an almost dreamlike quality. As other reviewers have commented (lamented?) about, there are many dream sequences, all of which have significance as the story is unveiled. The dreams, the "silence that cannot speak," the love that is voiceless and yet vivid, the grief that cries out loudly and yet unheard ... the power of Kogawa's writing lies in being able to interpret and experience this imagery, and feel the pain of the internment as if doing so first hand.
I was surprised to see the number of negative reviews this book has received here ... I feel compelled to include my voice with those who thoroughly recommend this book. "Obasan" is the best novel on the internment I have yet to come across, and certainly among the most powerful books I have read. Although Kogawa writes of a silence that does not speak, she breaks the silence beautifully with "Obasan," revealing a history that many do not know, and many do not talk about. This is a story that must be remembered and retold ... so history does not repeat itself.

Obasan, a must-read book
By A Customer
When I first purchased Obasan, I was unsure of how much I would enjoy the book. Fortunately, it turned out to be one of the best books I have ever read. In the novel, Joy Kogawa deals with the Canadian Japanese internment camps during World War II. She does a masterful job of using flashbacks to tell the story through the eyes of a young girl who is forced to move with her family to different camps and farms to survive during the war. Kogawa uses many autobiographical elements in the novel to help tell this magnificent story. Her descriptive language is beautiful and allows the story to flow along at an easy pace. She also utilizes many similes and metaphors to help the reader see what she sees a little better. Although there are not many symbols in the novel, the ones that Kogawa uses are utterly important to the story. Kogawa mainly focuses on themes of prejudice and silence, in which all the characters embody one or the other. The change in setting, both place and time, can be confusing at first, but once the reader catches on, they will become engrossed in the deep plotline. And although the story is written about Japanese Canadians and their struggle to make it during World War II, Obasan is definitely aimed at the general American audience, so that hopefully they will be able to see the light that Joy Kogawa shines on the entire situation. After reading the novel, I can definitely say that I recommend it to any and everyone out there that is interested in the history of the Japanese internment camps and World War II. And even if you aren't it is still a very well put together book that will pull you into its plot and not let you go. This novel is a definite must read for everyone.

deeply moving and elegantly written
By Aleksandra Nita-Lazar
I picked "Obasan" from the shelf with new books in the library, motivated by the title and author's name, driven by my fascination with everything Japanese. And, as it came out, I this is exactly what is criticized in the book. Joy Kogawa is Canadian, of the family living in Canada for generations. She is a poet, which has a beautiful influence on her prose, which is very precise whenever she wants it to be, and, on the other hand, full of unique similes and metaphors. The language changes depending on the perspective - the narrator is Naomi Nakane, a 35 year old teacher, who, confronted with the past, goes back to her childhood memories, reads letters from family and officials, and at present takes care of her Uncle's funeral arrangements. The book is not very big, yet it is good to take time to read it, to take it in.

Whereas the language is a very strong asset of this novel, the story was extremely moving for me too. Maybe it is only European ignorance- I knew nothing about persecutions and internalization of Canadian citizens of Japanese origin during World War II. I was, shortly speaking, shocked, because I regarded Canada as one of the most liberal countries, caring for the inhabitants. It seems that no nation has an unstained past...

It is great that books like "Obasan" are written, because the general unawareness of this problem, especially when Holocaust and Gulags are widely recognized (and there were times when nobody believed in concentration camps in Poland or work camps in Siberia), is absolutely unacceptable.

The suffering of one Japanese family, deprived of their belongings, fighting for humane treatment and trying to keep some dignity while treated with disrespect and separated, seen mostly by innocent child's eyes, is a powerful evocation. The issues of racism, different perception of people because of their appearance and roots, children's cruelty, are also discussed.

A great and successful effort. I am going to read the second part,"Itsuka", as soon as I can lay my hands on it.
