Australian Barry Petersen was a legend for the "Tiger Men" he led against the Viet Cong - but the CIA didn't like it. Sandy Barron reviews the story of a Vietnam war experience with a difference

Barry Petersen was 28-years-old when he was dropped off in mountainous Darlac province South Vietnam, with a bag of cash worth about US$350 (Bt 8,750) and vague instructions from the CIA to "get to know the locals". Almost thirty years later, Bangkok- based Petersen is full of affection for the Montagnard hill-tribe people he found in the highlands and downright chilly about his former CIA masters

"I was not a secret service officer, but a simple soldier with that special operations training. Now I was to become a CIA man, without understanding what the term meant, or what it entailed" he writes in Tiger Men the story of his two years in the highlands which was a bestseller in Australia and has just been published by White Orchid Press in Bangkok

"With the Rade in particular that means their whole way of life is being surpressed," says Petersen. North Vietnamese have been resettled in the highland areas and "superimposed" over Montagnard villages. "The Rade are very demoralised - it's very upsetting. I think the Vietnamese did have to take steps to suppress the insurgency, but I think the steps they chose were very harsh - they've destroyed the way of life of ethnic minority groups." Resistance to the Vietnamese is now limited to the level of "banditry" says Petersen

Tiger Men is written in the first-person in a tight, readable style and illuminates a fascinating and little known aspect of the Vietnam War. This new edition would have been enhanced by the inclusion of more follow-up on the fate of the Montegnard since the mid-sixties, but that might have called for a different kind of book. Tiger Men's strengths, and limits, are in its sharp focus - the pragmatic Petersen sticks with his own story and ventures little into the realms of analysis of the wider dimensions of the war in Vietnam. -- Sandy Barron, The Nation, Bangkok, May 15 1994

I found this to be a very enjoyable book and informative. I was in the same area he was during the same time frame, but wasn't aware of his operations. Good information about the early years in Viet-Nam with the Rhade Montagnards.

Hard to find info on early FULRO days

Barry Petersen gives his account of our early efforts in Vietnam, when the U.S. was transitioning from village defense to border surveillance. His unique bottom up viewpoint highlights the often ignored personal nature of the war, and how the personalities of various American, Vietnamese, and Montagnard leaders effected the war effort in the Highlands. His Truong Son Commando Force decided to call its base 'Dam San', after the hero in a Rhade epic saga. Strangely enough, in 1961 the French Army disbanded an Airborne Commando (#35) in Algeria composed mostly of Rhade and Jarai, with exactly that name. One wonders if any Montagnard veterans of Algeria ended up in Petersen's force. Both shared the same insignia, but snarling tiger heads are common Asian symbols. Petersen's account of the early days of 'the United Front for the Struggle of Oppressed Races" (FULRO) are the most comprehensive I've seen in a single source. For those who loved the 'Yards' and were interested in FULRO, "Tiger Men" is a must read. Likewise, anyone who has traveled through Ban Me Thuot recently will find in Tiger Men a description of a town and way of life that has disappeared. The quiet, shaded former Rhade tribal capital is now a bustling city of 316,000 conquerors, capital to the Vietnamese coffee industry, the second largest in the world.

Barry Petersen is one of the most fascinating people that I have ever met.My Dad (an ex-soldier) and I drank a lot of beer and heard a lot of stories from Baz,as he was our neighbour.All of them check out,in fact Baz was quite modest about his experiences.

In the official history of Australian Special Forces in Vietnam,Barry is the only person with a chapter to himself.Special Forces soldiers that I have met testify to his skill,bravery and compassion for his private Montagnard army.

This is a riveting account of a little-known part of the Vietnam conflict from a tough,intelligent likeable writer and a brave and modest soldier.

Thoroughly recommended to anyone with an interest in the war and the Vietnamese people.

About the Author
Blind Harry is thought to have lived from 1440 to 1493. Little is known about him. His one major achievement was to gather and record in writing stories about Wallace. He sang or recited these stories in verse form, and was well received at the Renaissance Court o f James IV.

William Hamilton of Gilbertfield was a poet and soldier. All but forgotten now, it was he who brought Wallace back tot he attention with his hugely popular ‘translation’ of Blind Harry’s original poem.

Elspeth King is the Director of the Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum, which has a large collection of Wallace memorabilia and hosted the exhibition ‘Scotland’s Liberator- The Life and Legacy of William Wallace- throughout 1997 marking the 700 anniversary of the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

Owain Kirby, a recent graduate of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, is a freelance illustrator and artist who prefers to work in linocut, loves Scottish history and lives in Stirling.

A Good and Trusty Friend

Blind Harry wrote over a hundred years after Wallace was executed, but to this day his history is the most complete life of Wallace. Some dispute the extent of the recorded adventures and argue it is folk lore or fable, but fact is often stranger than fiction. I first encountered the 1800's reprint of the manuscript in the rare books section at Sydney University Library some twenty years ago, and having my own personal copy now is a rare treat indeed. Forget Braveheart. The movie could never encompass a fraction of Blind Harry's description of the deeds of Wallace. A word of caution to those who claim descent from Wallace. It is recorded that he died without issue. So I am of his family, but none are of his lineage.

Read it for the drama, and the poetry of the legend. Or read it out of respect for the world's first, and best, guerrilla fighter.

I am glad I bought this book. I now know the finner details about Sir William Wallaces and his life, the details that the movie BraveHeart would not have been able to include, unless it was made into a mini-series.

Philips Research, and SAP Research, develops a systematic approach to performance measurement for industrial research organizations in innovation-driven companies.

The following questions are addressed:

(1) Which research goals do research departments have?

(2) Which KPIs do they use to monitor the achievement of these goals?

(3) Is there a systematic best-practice approach to selecting KPIs for performance goals?

The outcome is a complete set of eleven performance clusters, such as the transfer of research results to the development or other organizational departments, and each cluster has its own set of KPIs. The eleven clusters are: Technology Transfer, Future Business Opportunities, Technical Achievements, Intellectual Property, Operational Excellence, Talent Pool, Image, Publications, Presence in Scientific Community, Collaboration with Academia, Collaboration with Partners and Customers.

Formalist criticism of the modern novel has concentrated on its spatial aspects. Patricia Tobin focuses, instead, on the modern novel's temporal structure. She notes that the "genealogical imperative" that dominated the nineteenth-century novel, in which one event gave birth to another, has broken down in the twentieth-century novels she studies. Further, she draws parallels between this collapse of linear narrative and the current challenge to linearity from many other areas of modern thought.

Beginning with Mann's Buddenbrooks as a family chronicle novel that fully embodies the classical genealogical structure, the author extends her analysis to include distortions of the linear perspective in Lawrence's The Rainbow, Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!, Nabokov's Ada, or Ardor, and Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. She finds that in these novels about family relationships, the continuity of time, family, and story has dissolved so that past, present, and future have lost their distinctions; sins against the dynastic family are not only recognized but celebrated; and literary and existential meanings are suspended in unlikely juxtapositions, irrational metamorphoses, and proliferating possibilities. Professor Tobin suggests that the disappearance of the genealogical imperative in the contemporary world's sense of reality may account for much of what appears to be anonymous, peripheral, and excessive in post-modern fiction.

An academic study

This book is an academic study of 'Time and the Novel'. It devotes chapters to Mann's 'Buddenbrooks' to Faulkner's 'Absalom Absalom' to Nabakov's'Ada or Ardor' and to Gabriel Garcia-Marquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'. Its initial claim is that contemporary criticism has seen the great transformation of the modern novel in terms of Space. Tobin attempts to extend this into studying the modern Novel's transformation of ordinary genealogical Time into one which is broken into many different perspectives.

I found this book extremely difficult to read and understand.

I tried for a close reading of the Faulkner chapter but here too I was stymied. One problem was that the author seemed to assume the reader completely familiar with the story and characters of the work.

For a different kind of treatment of 'Time and the Novel' I would look to the classical study of Mendilow.

Excellent book on a neglected, yet complex, topic

This is a book for specialists, written by an author who is probably the foremost expert on Olivi alive today (aside from writing three books and numerous articles on Olivi, he has also edited some of Olivi's writings -- including some of the more important *quaestiones* of his on *usus pauper*). Peter John Olivi (1248-98) was one of the 14th centuries brightest, as well as quite prolific, thinkers whose writings on Franciscan issues and whose apocalypticism formed the background to the still nebulous 'spiritual' Franciscans.
This book is concerned primarily with the last two decades of Olivi's life, which is the beginning of the *usus pauper* controversy. *Usus pauper*, i.e. 'minimal use', was a concept (probably) implicit in St Francis's view of the Franciscan lifestyle; in particular, Olivi is convinced that it is contained in the vow of poverty. Olivi's contemporaries agreed with Olivi that *usus pauper* is very important in the Franciscan lifestyle, but they could not agree that it is contained in the vow of poverty. The reasons as to why Olivi and many of his contemporaries disagreed sometimes seem obvious, sometimes obscure; e.g., can *usus pauper* be delineated in explicit terms so that one will always be able to tell where the line he's not to cross is? (Olivi says no.) The danger of this position is that many believed that violating a vow entailed a mortal sin -- so if one cannot recognize what does or does not violate *usus pauper*, he could commit a mortal sin without realizing it. (Olivi argues that a minor violation of *usus pauper* is only a venial sin.) Yet I am oversimplifying the whole controversy: those interested in this topic would be better served by actually reading the book.
In this book, Burr also tracks down the origins of the controversy and forms hypotheses as to why this debate took place so long after the Franciscan rule was appoved (1223); toward the end of the work, he notes several ways in which this controversy was to have important repercussions -- particularly in the second and third decades of the 14th century.
As I said before, this is a book with a very specific focus. In terms of achieving what he set out to do, Burr succeeds admirably. Yet this is a book that only a lay reader extremely interested in the history of the Franciscan order would want to read. For most people interested in this topic (yet aren't actually intending to, say, study the mendicant debate on poverty), much better, by far, would be his most recent book, *The Spiritual Franciscans* (2001) for a general, yet detailed, account of the rise and fall of the 'spirituals', in which Olivi (and *usus pauper*), amongst others, figures largely. Another excellent book on an overlapping topic is Malcolm Lambert's *Franciscan Poverty* (1998) -- though good luck ordering it through Amazon!
